Writing in North America is becoming more 'simple' for the simple-minded. Twilight and 50 Shades are good examples, even the UK (part of the USA?) and its Harry Potter are a long way from something Umberto Eco would write.
I gather that because in some parts of the world: writing is found amongst the family orientated or youth. In the USA - Art can be seen manifest as something for the 'kiddies' (let alone - the mass), hence 'DisneyLand', while Politics is for the Adults (let alone the Individual) - hence the White House.
Come to Australia and Writing, is less fictional and more known for 'Paperwork'.
Australia has more 'factual' paperwork than any other nation by 2/3rds.
That's 'serious' writing. While Politics here is becoming more 'youthful' and for the masses. I tend to think of Capitol Hill as 'Bag End' where all the little Hobbits live in the Shire (A.C.T).
So in a way - if you want to succeed as a Writer in the USA/UK. What sells is 'simple' stuff or 'Young Adult' fiction, etc. Don't expect great sales with something thought provoking and heavy. You'll only get 'establishment awards' from the Industry.
But hey, depends what you want
That's exactly what I'm talking about. "Simple" for the simple minded, because anything above that is beyond comprehension.
What disturbs me, for example, the likes of Twilight and 50 Shades aren't only enjoyed by the kiddies, tweens and teens, but fully grown adults!
Music is another example of commercialised "dumbed down", I cannot stand to listen to this rap and pop garbage that you hear non-stop.
I find myself actually enjoying music dating back to the 60's and 70's more than today's BS.
