You have my utmost respect, Aqua.

I am not a Muslim, but my son has a Muslim name. He has no real Islamic influence and is very much your typical Aussie kid. I am telling you this because you spoke of fear for your daughters - I'm afraid for my son. We recently moved house and I am living with a constant dull dread of that look of surprised distaste that is becoming more common as we meet our neighbours and names are exchanged. It used to be rare, but it's pretty much the norm lately. I have seriously considered changing his name because he is starting to suffer some mild anxiety. Imagine the fear of a little girl with the scarf?

These are crappy times, but when people like you stop and reconsider and look for the humanity behind the distorted pictures we're shown, only good will come of it.

Changing the name to an Australian name is the least you could do. My German grandfather and all his brothers and sisters anglesised their names when WW! whipped up a fever of hatred against the Hun.

JUST DO IT!

Don't delay, procrastinate, linger in limbo, or loiter at Opportunity's Door to make this long-overdue change.

NOW! sister.

Don't let him continue to drag this dead cat around with him. Life has enough 'challenges' without you making it any more difficult through your own volition.

Swap his Mohammadan name for a nice, harmless, politically-neutral name like ... er ... 'Herbert'.

Cool

I can relate to that.... my aunt with the German name was abused in the streets when Europe War 762, v.4 broke out in 1939... disgusting.  Her brother was a policeman and her other brother my dad, joined the Army, while her oldest brother, my uncle, went down on 11/09/1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain.

It's sad when people generalise.

Muslim soldiers have died fighting with the British and the American forces against the Taliban... they enlisted out of loyalty and patriotism.

I'm not going to validate ignorance and he doesn't want to either. His name has a beautiful meaning that suits him. I'll continue to teach him to be proud of who he is.

yes , absolutely. Delberately set him up for a lifetime of knowing that he has been designated as not being part of australian culture. Thatll show em.. Then when he grows up and becomes a bitter twisted anti australian you can b;lame it on australian culture well done. Keep wearing that Niqab so everyone can see how different you are.

Don't listen to the racists and bigots Annie (you know who they are).

It sounds like your son is happy with his name. If later in life he wishes to change it, let it be his choice. I'm sure he will grow up to be a wise person having you for his mum. Who knows? by that time the west might be over its Islamophobia.

can you anglecise his name? My real name is very Italian, but I only use it on legal documents or with people who know me closely, instead I use a translated version (John Smith) ... not for any other reason than its just impler to use John ....  I got sick of having to correct everyone pronunciation all the time ...

Lived in the Leichhardt area for 3 years.
It's pure Italiano.

What I notice about places like this is that it is much like a Transit Lounge: You have Italians who come to this country and settle 'amongst their own' in Leichhardt where they either
1. Move out of Leichhardt and integrate with Australia at large and all of those within it.
2. Stay in Leichhardt as part of the 'Transit Lounge' experience.
3. Realise Australia is not for them and move back home or somewhere else.

I could always tell the 3 different types in Leichhardt of Italians - the ones that would branch out, the ones that would stay on the fence and the others who go back to their original home in Italy.

I think it's good that there are such areas to help people from around the world...
...just as there are 'pockets' of Australia around the world: Earls Court in UK, Whistler in Canada, Hamilton in NZ, etc.

I feel a tad sorry for the 'oldies' who are dragged by their kids into another country. They are set in their ways and find it the hardest to 'intergrate'. Strangers in a Strange Land for sure.  Sad

...Oh, and Leichhardt gave me a wonderful Italian experience, when I couldn't afford an airfare to visit.  Smiley

not many of them anymore ... used to apply, but not so much now ... you need to remember that many immigrants from Italy in the 50's 60's and 70's did not come here to migrate permanently ... they came here for jobs. ... Southern Italy after WWII had no jobs, and it was common for Italians to work overseas, if they were planning on staying long, they would bring their families along... my grandfather left his wife and kids for 2 years to go and work in Argentina, sending most of his pay back home every month ... it was the only way to survive ... the fact that many stayed despite not planning to is a testament to just how great this country is.

people migrating from italy now aren't subject to the same conditions and usually come here because they genuinely want to migrate ...

Yep - I now live in the Riverina, rich in Italian history (real neat Museum out at Griffith) - but a lot of those Farms are being taken over by Indians now. I guess some peoples come here for the Money, not to breed.

I walked past a squatting Aboriginal in Griffith main-street when I was just a month old here and he said with somewhat of a shake with his head towards the Indians
"Look at all the black C@#%s everywhere!"  Roll Eyes

He is easily as Australian as you. Anyone who judges him based on his name doesn't deserve to be a part of his life. Any opportunity that he will lose for just having a Muslim name, he is better off without.

Thank you Annie. My daughter was very upset. Then a young teenage girl tried to hang herself over the media images and I started to become very fearful myself. Then I did what men do and got really angry.
Which is rediculous as nothing usually upsets me. But death and hangings and beheadings were very much on my mind and I always turn to Buddhism when my equilibrium is disturbed. And I had the epiphany that hating ISIS characters would turn me , more and more into an ISIS character,   Paradoxical, I love the paradox in Buddhism and it dawned on me that this had to cease.
So I slept fine last night.
These times are indeed crappy Annie,  all my best to your son.

Well, strictly speaking, Buddhism isn't a religion.  It is a philosophy.  It is and always has been, intended to provide guidance to self-realisation, not provide instruction on the method of salvation or belief in a higher being other than the self.

Pansi, thank you Smiley

John, we use a diminutive of his name sometimes. If he wants to change it formally or informally, he'll have my support.
