The aging of our scientists is a real problem

The way grants are awarded favors older scientists who have already published research papers causes problems for younger scientists and they tend to leave science. Lack of funds available for medical etc etc research.

On top of this—deregulating Uni fees will see less students electing to study science. But money can be found for chaplains in schools, what a spavined country to let this crap happen!

The GP co-payment will fund them but the tyrants in the unrepresentative house are blocking it.

No, those payments—which don’t fund Medicare—will go to Big Pharma not the universities.

Try reading the link next time.

Just make a proviso that an experienced scientist must use a % of the grant to hire an inexperienced scientist to have a roll.

That way the inexperienced get some money and most of all, experience. Then they will be experienced scientists who get grants.

Pretty sure we would have to put a little extra in the grant, but it would be money well spent, but im not talking a whole lot more.

My daughter is a research scientist, and usually grants are awarded to successful researchers for research into any area which is relevant to the awarding organisation.

Sounds like a plan, plus make more money available and ditch Payne’s stupid idea re Uni prices.

Doubt it.  People who are likely to study STEM fields will still study them, it's the slackers studying useless fields to avoid getting a job who will opt out.

Successful = experienced.

the aging of our scientist population is a real problem, especially with this anti–science govt we have.

I work sometimes with researchers.  they best person gets the money.  seems the reasonable way to get the best outcomes.

I really wish Perceptions Now would stop willy nilly moving of posts all the time! At least give notice or ask!

Who wants to deregulate Uni fees? Christopher bloody Pyne so this thread was fine in PolSuck.

When course fees go way up with deregulation daddy’s little boy will study law or business, they don’t tend to study science (maybe medicine but not pure science.) Those on lower incomes who would have done science will be frozen out of Uni due to the deregulation of fees and the higher HECS interest rate. Far fewer females will study too.

With the aging of our scientific population this is going to be a real problem and soon.
