Jacqui Lambie shows Aust pride.

“Many other modern progressive countries like France have enacted these laws. We shouldn’t be afraid of offending the politically correct or the extremists.”

Hijabs would not be banned under her proposed law, because they “do not cover the identity of the wearers,” she said.

The Tasmanian PUP Senator hopes MPs are able to exercise a conscience vote on the bill she plans on introducing this week.

“I expect the question of support for my call for a ban on identity concealing religious garments will be a matter of conscience for individuals,” she said.

“I hope that any vote and support for my new law will be decided by the quality of the argument and debate in Parliament – and not some party powerbroker telling senators how to vote.

“Political representatives should always be free to express the will of the people who voted for them, in the parliament.”

Senator Lambie said her office has received almost a thousand calls and emails regarding her push to have the burqa banned and “99% of the people have been in favour.”

“I haven’t meet one Tasmanian who has been opposed to my call to ban the Burga [sic].”

The Senator insists she is “voicing the opinion of the majority of Australians”.

“The world is in a mess now because the ordinary Australian voice of commonsense has been shouted down and censored by the religious fanatics, extremists and the politically correct.”

Senator Lambie said she is yet to speak to her Palmer United Party colleagues about the issue.

You would hard pressed to find a judge "wearing his very own bit of head kit" keeping the moral high ground.

The men only want the woman to wear it so they don't end up looking like our woman who look 60 when they're 40 from to much sun. They could be a bit nicer by giving them a color that reflects the sun, must be quite toasty under all that black.

innocent people are being beheaded and we are bombing another country and she talks about burqas.being banned...

I would hope most Australians had more important things to consider at this time..

I partly agree with you, and also disagree. I don't see how we can ban the burqa completely. However, as is the case with motorcycle helmets, wearing the burqa when entering a bank, for example, ought to be banned purely for the purposes of identification & security. The same goes for drivers licence photographs.
