The MDB is/was a long term failure for one reason - Rising Salinity from excess pumping of irrigation water onto land and excess catchments and the concurrent demolition of salt sucking trees such as Mallee....

These actions serve to raise the water table, and with it the salinity... which is why, when you fly over the Lower Murray, you see a massive grey area of dead land, which then reflects the sun from salt deposits....

So - I would seriously like to see what the overall plan is.... and I still say a better long-term option is the GAIA Mk 1, which would provide not only drainage of salt, but also a micro-climate...

ADDS:-  Oh - and what's going to happen when leaching of fracking materials and mining tailings etc begins and permeates into water supplies?

There are many issues that need to be looked at here - not just some simplistic concept of digging wells for the global village....

Yep salt has been a issue, but again what was the alternative other than a sparsely populated country?

Green has been told to attack any dam-building on principle.

It might injure the habitat of some frog or skink. On the other hand it might contribute to the agricultural progress in this country which will feed a lot of Asia and provide ongoing employment.

Recognise that Greens are a barrier to progress!

What progress?
Unsustainable development using old methods shown to have failed in the past!
Its stupidity/conservatism to just repeat mistakes continually.

How has the MDB catchment been a failure? We could never have grown as a nation with out it. The MDB catchment is at 65% at the start of summer, how is that bad?

What is your alternative?

Where would we source water for agriculture from? Would you just deny water to our agriculture and import all our food?

What is your alternative?

Huh

Changing our food requirements is a good place to start. Shift from high water use meat to low water use food like fungus and insects.

Shifting from high water use crops like cotton to fibres like hemp that grow on marginal land with less water requirements.

Recycling water

etc

OK so you want to change the diet of the nation - where's your thought out plan for that?!

How much water does hemp use per hectare V's cotton?

Shifting human food sources are a result of bad capitalism driven policies, not mine personally.

10 billion plus hungry humans integrated with peak soil, peak water, changing climate and so on.

as for water use comparison, you are a child of the google age. Embrace it.

Its sheer twaddle from the LNP, what to do with the disused open coal pits, since Abbott talked the Chinese out of further buying Australian Coal.
