Brian Ross wrote on Oct 22 nd, 2014 at 11:45pm: You do realise that what some nations call "Multiculturalism" is not the same as what other nations refer to as "Multiculturalism"?
There are different types of Multiculturalism. There is pro-active Multiculturalism, laissez faire Multiculturalism, melting-pot Multiculturalism, etc.
The thing is, most critics of Multiculturalism prefer to conflate all the different types in order to create this strawman image, which is easier for them to argue against, rather than accept the concept of pluralism. ALL Multiculturalism is divisive, & demoralizing. At it's core this doctrine preaches that separatism & segregation is acceptable to preserve one's own culture, not as simply a suggestion, but as an actual way to live.
Therefore, by definition, Multiculturalism is totally unacceptable in ANY form in our close-knit, unified Society.
There's no need to sort it out..................Unacceptable in ALL Forms....period.
When it comes to addressing immigration I believe there is only one way, & that's Cultural Assimilation.
Not, & I repeat, not the assimilation forced upon the Aboriginal Peoples in the past, that was more than wrong, but a friendly & welcoming assimilation.......an assimilation centered around ongoing community support, inclusiveness, & constructive education.
When anyone leaves their homeland to come to Australia to settle in our land, they are coming here to better themselves, & to enjoy a better way of life for themselves & their family.
All immigrants upon arriving should be made to feel welcome.
They need to be helped to understand that Australia has it's own culture, language, & laws, & we want them to join us in that.
They need to be helped to understand that the price to live in our sweet & welcoming land is small ..... simply join us, & celebrate all that it means to be an Australian, as an Australian in an Australian Society within an Australian Culture.
The price is small ------ compared to all the benefits they can reap.
The new immigrant should be eager & willing to accept, that if he/she/they wants to stay in Australia, & claim her as their own, that they need to eventually (asap) learn English, need to take on our culture as their own, & need to obey our laws. Most of all the need to understand that we will help them in their transition.
Now, it is not realistic that these transformations can happen over night, but with Community Support, & Education, these transformations can take place sooner & easier.
If they wish to speak their native tongue within the home, or to others who can understand them, that's fine, but they must eventually have an acceptable level of English proficiency. They need to attend schooling at some level to attain this, & the Community needs to support their efforts to ensure the best outcomes.
In the end they will 'melt', 'blend', 'homogenize' into the Australian Society they traveled here to live in.
They will become Australian.
They need not forget their old ways, just accept there is a new way to live, & conforming to this 'new way' is the pathway they need to follow to experience the privilege they chose Australia above all others for.
Now, on the other hand, any immigrant that totally refuses to assimilate into our society, & insists on living by their own 'rules' & 'customs', must leave our shores......period.
Offer them the alternatives once more, & if the outcome is the same.....they must either leave on their own accord, or they will be helped to leave through the deportation procedure. Now, that's a 'fair go'. .
