This gets funnier and funnier every hour. Now he is demanding a phone call with Tony Abbott. Getting further instructions?

Aaaaah!!!! I can see Tony being the great negotiator, the terrorist gets arrested overnight, no bloodshed and the plebs will vote for Tony, in the knowledge that he, and only he can save us from the great Jihadi threat......and we all lived happily ever after.

Actually, we might need a couple more terror sieges before voting day, just to make sure.

Waiting for Armchair to come in with:-

"Tony Abbott Defuses Terror Situation in Martin Place - Takes Down Armed Terrorist!"

.. or some similar delusional comment....

He does it for a joke which raises serious questions in itself......

A phone call with Tony?

Down at the Siege Site:-

"Get me the monkey - this organ grinder in this coffee shop isn't working!"

"Er.. that's a coffee grinder, Ach-Med."

"OK - I still want the monkey!  and no monkey business!"

Or better still: Lost Weak End 58 in moon suit rescues Sydney.

I've been watching.... too many cops took their eyes off the front when the hostages arrived and cuddled them instead.... especially the women...that's for the boys at the back.. not the front...

And those frontline guys should be rotated every fifteen minutes...

The Bastard!  He's achieved his objective!  The Opera House has cancelled tonight's performances...

Which is the greater act of terrorism - holding up a chololate coffee shop or some of those performances....

....but the shopping went on, one report said that the CBD resembles a ghost town with businesses in shut down, but nick up to DJ's they're doors are still open.

No - attention span....... too long of nothing happening makes them unwary....  I didn't mean cuddling like that..... more like taking your mind off the job to comfort some hysterical sheila who should be cheering that she's out.... any distraction can be dangerous.

Leave the comforting to those at the back, watch your front and keep your eye out for your mate who is in front of you.... in the hot seat.

Grappler probably has a point, but I have no idea what the protocols are.  I did laugh at the mid-morning ABC TV coverage when we saw two armed blokes, one kneeling and the other standing, and the bloke standing was totally unable to target his weapon even though he tried to seat it on his left arm held across his chest and left hand palmed against a wall next to his right shoulder......he held that for about 15 seconds and the two then swapped positions.  We saw no more of them not long thereafter.

I'm sure the NSW Police will incorporate some of the thinking raised here into their training... lessons will be learned.

Not sure if they have any ex-Army guys in their teams.... the training in the Army is intense in this kind of thing... police not as much so and they are not all clearly detailed to SPG or whatever, and are on call to it instead.  (Red - you there?)

Might see some changes.... expensive though....

Oh - it's like sniper teams - the protocol (used to be) that fifteen minutes was as long as a shooter could maintain focus.... unless in action....

Attention cannot wander...... and distractions such as running women hostages must be ignored.... let those behind take care of them... the distraction could be deliberate....

The Police sniper I saw had a Accuracy International rifle with a bipod at the front and a monopod in the rear of the stock.

They could sit there all day looking through their $4k Schmidt and Bender scope, the rear monopod is adjustable for tracking the targets with precision and ease.

The general duty cops probably lack the training and equipment of the police snipers.

Physically yes, Baron - it is the mental state of ennui that needs to be watched and training can't prevent that totally.. hence the need for changeover...

As an aside - I'd like to thank Wee Johnnie for his gun laws and the mayhem they caused in the general community by relentless jihads against gun owners and men generally (just in case, you know) ..... while leaving it open for any of criminal bent to obtain firearms more easily on the black market flooded with firearms...

well thats true of course..but be honest have you taken a close look at the gear they wear.. if the women who is hysterical..grabbed hold of their gear wouldnt he look great throwing her at someone at the back whilst she is hanging on to him..

how about looking at this from where they are standing...
nothing is rehearsed no book can tell them how to act its all as it happens...lucky for us we are never in those situations....but I would hope people wouldnt nit pic

those women came out flying... who knows what they have been through...how would they know where to go if they werent helped..?..

in movies its always different isnt it..they know exactly where to go..

I get more amusement from you aussie.. protocols..at a time like this,..

have you had the pleasure of standing for hours in full kit..not knowing if the guy inside has a bomb strapped to his chest....which might take him and you all the way to heaven??.. I am sure you havent...otherwise you would be more considerate of what you laugh at...

as for PROTOCOLS>. I am sure you can google them and find out just what is the protocol for a nutter in a cafe with a gun and a flag.. and heaps of hostages.. I bet its all there on wiki.. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Be glad it's NOT the SAS (British), cods.... they don't make the mistake of assuming a hostage is not hostile.... and they are bundled up and hands and ankles secured with plastic ties....

IN any situation that is as fluid as this, everyone could be an enemy.... sorry 'bout that......
