My friend's husband had 3 police cars and a paddywagon watch him eat his lunch today in an Artarmon café because the frightened woman behind the counter called the police after he'd ordered. My friend is muscular and has a beard. And he's a Muslim. They drew quite a crowd. This guy is an upstanding member of the community.

What's happening in Martin Place is scary, but as of now, we don't know what's exactly going on. It's far better to be part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. There are consequences for preaching hatred and they usually fall on those who least deserve it. It's important to act like the society we want to live in.

its disappointing but nor surprising and it is understandable. he fits the profile of how terrorists are viewed.  Perhaps if muslims were far more pro-active at denouncing terrorism rather than holding protests agains the arrest of terrorists they might not be treated so suspiciously.

Longy, I have seen and heard Muslims denouncing what is going on in Sydney all day. They're falling over each other to distance themselves from terrorism.

I don't think it is understandable. What happened to "be alert not alarmed?"

Plenty of comment from Muslims today against this guy and this type of action.

but will it be condemned from the pulpit?  will it be openly stated as being anti-Koran?

Sadly, no.

It's been denounced by the Islamic religious leaders around the whole country.

If wisdom prevails, many lessons will be learned from this (hopefully) non-fatal incident.  We do NOT wish to wait for a terrible incident to learn those lessons... and where insufficient training for police officers (etc) may result in some being killed or injured unnecessarily...

When I went for officer training, my first chat was with an ex-Rhodesian guy.. to whom I said that there is no substitute for weapons training... and you can never train enough.....

Already had a Muslim cleric condemning this kind of thing... I hope,as you do, that they all do.

No - I do not advocate universal right to carry arms..... but I oppose creating people into criminals so as to preclude them from doing so.... there is a world of difference... and I'm afraid government over-stepped the mark there and will pay for it one day... right about now this is part of the deep discontent in the community since people are not stupid.

I've been watching.... too many cops took their eyes off the front when the hostages arrived and cuddled them instead.... especially the women...that's for the boys at the back.. not the front...

And those frontline guys should be rotated every fifteen minutes...

Well said.

I was surprised there wasn't a reception committee on standby to move immediately if any hostages were released.

It was a tactical error on the part of the frontline police to lower their guns and take on the role of paramedics.

Be glad it's NOT the SAS (British), cods.... they don't make the mistake of assuming a hostage is not hostile.... and they are bundled up and hands and ankles secured with plastic ties....

IN any situation that is as fluid as this, everyone could be an enemy.... sorry 'bout that......

Correct.

Australian police are far more politically inhibited than the UK police.

Remember the Redfern Riot when a mob of aborigines hurled bottles and abused a line of police for nine solid hours because the 'brass' didn't want the cops to move forward and make arrests because this might be seen as Whitey oppressing the blacks?

The only exception to the UK's aggressive form of policing is when it involves mobs of Muslims in the streets of London and elsewhere. I've see video of British riot police in full retreat while being chased by mobs of Muslim youths.

Hopefully a new kind of political party will emerge within the next 50 years in the UK who will take a very different view of how to deal with these mobs of foreigners running down the streets of British cities.

yes ... but when the anti-gun crusade devolved into setting in place any number of laws that permitted the state to CREATE criminals of ordinary citizens - the whole thing became dangerous to society and remains so.

Wee Johnnie and the implementers of such laws (small 'l' deliberate) have much to answer for - it's called reducing the populace under despotism...

If this happened in some parts of the USA you could have 10-12 out of 30 hostages licensed for concealed carry with a pistol and carrying,if there is only 1 offender it would have been over hours ago.

Statistics show those licensed for concealed carry have far lower offending rates for crimes compared to those not licensed for concealed carry.

and you think letting EVERYONE carry a gun will reduce crime?

Can you cite where I have said everyone should carry a gun?

Convicted felons are not allowed to have guns in the USA, we exclude people from firearm eligibility if they have a criminal record or mental health issues.
I have always said these are good things.

The stats do show the higher the concealed carry permits the lower the crime rate in those areas.

Leftists and the Ayatollahs have a lot in common when it comes to criticism of Islam, they don't tolerate it.

That is very sad, Annie.

Not at all.

There are 52 Islamic countries in the world for him to chose from ~ but surprise surprise, despite being a devout Muslim ~ he chooses to live in non-Muslim secular Australia.

The safety of the hostages must take priority over everything else.
