Aust Multiculturalism 'strong': Greens

Australian multiculturalism is stronger than ever, Greens acting leader Adam Bandt says, after the fatal Sydney siege.

The proof was in the supportive public response, both online and in the community, following the tragic and terrifying event.

"I think that multiculturalism in Australia is stronger than ever," Mr Bandt said in Melbourne.

"The outpouring ... to say we're going to lend our support to peace-loving people of all faiths, to make sure Australia is a place where everyone can feel safe, is a testament to that."

Mr Bandt said the incident posed questions about how vulnerable people could be protected from extremist propaganda online, and how a man with apparent mental health issues - and facing charges - could obtain a gun.

"These are questions that we'll have to ask over the coming days, but today the focus has to be on supporting each other and everyone who now may be fearful of reprisals because of their faith or race," he said.

Greens leader Christine Milne is in Peru for climate change talks.
