Lawyers have asked the US government to hand over any letters or other documents it might have relating to the claims of two women that Prince Andrew was among those who lobbied its justice department on behalf of the billionaire financier and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Buckingham Palace said it was categorically untrue that the 54-year-old prince had tried to influence US prosecutors, saying its earlier denial of allegations from a third woman that she had been forced by Epstein to have sex with the Duke of York on three occasions when she was underage also covered the lobbying claims made in the same papers filed in a Florida court earlier last year.

“This relates to longstanding and ongoing civil proceedings in the US, to which the Duke of York is not a party,” the palace said. “As such we would not comment in detail. However, for the avoidance of doubt, any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue.”

There were also strenuous denials this weekend from the US lawyer who worked for Epstein and is also alleged to have had sex with a minor. Alan Dershowitz said the woman making the claims “should not be believed”. The former Harvard law professor said: “My only feeling is if she’s lied about me – which I know to an absolute certainty she has – she should not be believed about anyone else.”

He said the woman – referred to in the court papers as Jane Doe #3 – had “lied about other public figures including a former prime minister and others who she claims to have participated in sexual activities with”.

“So I think it must be presumed all her allegations against Prince Andrew were false as well,” he said. Dershowitz added that he had only met the prince at public occasions, and had never been alone with him.

The case that has been lodged in Florida centres on the deal that saw Jeffrey Epstein spend just 13 months in jail for having sex with a 14-year-old. He had been investigated for paying underage girls to have sex with him at his luxury Palm Beach home – and 40 women had come forward as victims. However, he cut a deal with federal prosecutors and the charges were not pursued.

Epstein pleaded guilty in state court to solicitation of prostitution and procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution. The Palm Beach police force was furious at what it saw as lenient treatment of Epstein.

Attorney Brad Edwards of Fort Lauderdale, who represented three of the young women, said in 2011 that he believed that none of the women identified as victims in the federal investigation were told of the deal, calling the decision “outrageous”.

Now two of the women are bringing a case against the prosecutors, claiming their rights were violated because they were not consulted on the secret deal and the third, Jane Doe #3, has applied to be included in the lawsuit against the federal prosecutor. It is in her legal document to join the case that she makes the allegations against the Duke of York. It reads: “Epstein instructed Jane Doe #3 that she was to give the prince whatever he demanded and required Jane Doe #3 to report back to him on the details of the sexual abuse.”

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, says Epstein forced her to have sexual encounters against her will between 1999 and 2002 after she was effectively recruited for his use by Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of the late media tycoon Robert Maxwell, when she was 15. A spokesman for Maxwell denied the allegations.

The woman added that the sex with Prince Andrew happened when she was underage – 18 is the age of consent in Florida – and on three occasions – in London, New York and on a private Caribbean island owned by Epstein – between 1999 and 2002.

In an interview in 2011, Prince Andrew denied any sexual contact with any of the young women connected to the multimillionaire.

The banker and the prince were photographed walking in New York’s Central Park together shortly after Epstein was released from his open prison and the resultant furore over their friendship led to the prince stepping down as a UK trade envoy.
