Nick Xenophon...
Jan 7th, 2015 at 8:01pm

give that man a cigar...

Quote:
Independent senator Nick Xenophon will seek to change Senate voting rules to make it harder for senators to be elected on tiny fractions of the general vote.

The current crop of crossbench senators, some elected with the help of so-called “preference whisperer” Glenn Druery, have raised the ire of Australia’s top chief executives, who want to see electoral reform, according to the 2015 Chanticleer CEO Outlook survey.

Senator Xenophon’s bill would require those who wished to vote “above the line” on the Senate ticket to choose a minimum of three potential members listed in order of preference. Voters going “below the line” would be required to choose a minimum of six potential new members.

well done nick...

i heard today that one of the seats in the last Victorian election was won with 1.6% of the primary vote..

Nick wants to stop all of this crap... so should everyone...

they don't represent the majority..

our system is flawed..

there are only 6 seats in the senate of vic.. so why the need to number 1 to 100?

you only need to pick your top 6

or above the line.. your top 3

so simple its genius.. !!

Disadvantaging Independents can only advantage the Major parties.

Big Business want to get rid of independents - they bought a government and they don't want the senate to get in the way of what they want.

My thought would to be very careful with this type of reform. Independents have served us very well.

The current system does not give voters the senate they voted for. I'm not surprised your say what you said now, but would be interested to see if you maintained your point of view if a government you support was in power and its legislation was being blocked by a handful of senators who garnered less than one percent of the primary vote. The current system favours those who can make the best preference deals, as we saw with the election of that Motoring Enthusiasts Party quarter-wit with around 0.5% of the primary vote and who can now hold the government hostage. His sitting in the senate is a farce that proves that constituents aren't being represented by those the majority wanted, but instead by micro parties with an extremely narrow area of interest. Voters and this country as a whole would benefit from a change to a first past the post system and getting rid of the current senate preference system for good.

people just do not understand the Senate voting system...half senate elections more than one bizarre way of voting...

they play on peoples ignorance.. mine included...

the senate is invisible...we neither know them or see them for the most part.....they need to do something

at least when we vote for the lower house we know where out vote is going..... with the other mess may as well go in with a PIN>.

and lets face it any tom dick or harry can sign on for it...its a joke. but a bloody expensive one.

I won't be supporting or calling for any changes.

The Senate is fine as it is.

But we hear this rubbish every single time a Lib govt doesn't get a compliant
Senate, and the decent people of this country are firkin sick of the whinging.

If the Libs were a decent govt, with decent policies, they wouldn't have a problem.

But they're neither.

Well said Kat, the senate is doing a good job.  Not everyone gets what they want.  Labor didnt when they were in power.  Now its the same for liberal.  Let them live with it.     Smiley

Just remember back to the TV Clip of Senator Ron Boswell ringing PM Howard and telling him he now had control of the Senate.  With both houses now in the hands of the Coalition, the door was open to workchoices - a policy even now, the Coalition say was flawed, but pushed through both houses without any proper scrutiny.

So, perhaps the majority of the Australian voters don't want this total control to ever happen again.  Had the Coalition not broken their trust with the voting public, both Labor and the Coalition may not have faced senate blockage.

You reap what you sow, get over it and learn how to negotiate
