NSW Labor to slash gambling tax

Tax on racing bets in NSW would more than halve under a Luke Foley-led Labor government.

The new opposition leader plans to cut the tax on every $100 wagered from $3.22 to $1.28 should he win the March election, News Corp Australia reports.

The change would bring NSW into line with Victoria and generate 2000 racing jobs, Mr Foley said.

The $100 million plan would begin at the beginning of 2016 to be in place in time for the autumn carnival.

Anti-gambling campaigners have slammed the NSW opposition's plan to more than halve taxes on racing bets.

Reverend Tim Costello, chief of World Vision Australia, says gambling is already out of control.

'One way of at least bringing back some benefits from this complete loss of control is taxation,' he told AAP.

'It places a cap on gambling, discourages it and returns some benefits to the community.

'The public good is not served by cutting gambling taxes.'

He suggested the racing industry could be better served by raising taxes on competing forms of gambling.

NSW Greens MP John Kaye said the racing industry doesn't deserve a tax break.

'This is public money feeding problem gambling and facilitating the mistreatment of animals,' he said.

Mr Foley has said the predicted $100 million a year loss in revenue would be offset by the generation of 2000 jobs in the racing industry.

Premier Mike Baird has said he will consider a possible gambling tax cut in the June budget.

Gee that will put a few of Labor's anti-gambling political allies nose's out of joint.... Cheesy  Grin

The change would generate 2000 racing jobs, Mr Foley said.

How exactly ?????

can not see any reason that 1 extra job would be created.

Lining up the tax between NSW and Vic would have other ramifications that would probably not be beneficial to NSW.

I can see no reason that NSW would want to collect less taxation and if they do want less money I can think of any number of taxes that would give a much better benefit.

This seems to be just stupid.

This would be enough for me to not vote for Labor in the NSW election.

the last thiung we needs is lower taxes on gambling.  given the appalling toll it takes on society, the tax on profits should be 105%.

Was it Labor or the Greens who wants to increase the size of the notes you can put into poker machines from $20 to $50? Can't remember which of those parties it was, but it surely wins the "Dumbass Idea of the Year" award not two weeks into 2015!!!
