Two men dead in Belgium counter-terror raids
Raids were carried out against a group suspected of preparing attacks on a grand scale, federal prosecutor says.

Two suspected jihadists were shot dead and a third arrested in eastern Belgium during a major operation on Thursday to prevent “imminent terrorist attacks on a grand scale”, a Belgian federal prosecutor has said.

The targets of the operation were a network of jihadists who had recently returned from Syria, the prosecutor said, and were on the point of launching an assault in Belgium.

A total of 10 search warrants were issued for synchronised raids in and around Brussels, as well as Molenbeek, Vilvorde and Verviers, at the end of a surveillance campaign that had lasted several weeks.

In Verviers, in eastern Belgium, three suspects in a house near the town’s central railway station shot at the police.

“The suspects immediately and for several minutes opened fire with military weaponry and handguns on the special units of the federal police before they were neutralised,” the prosecutor, Eric Van Der Sypt, said, adding: “These were extremely well-armed men.”

He said two of the suspects were killed and a third was arrested at the scene. Van Der Sypt said that no police officers or members of the public had been hurt in the operation. One wounded gunman was said to be a Chechen who is “active on the terrorist scene” according to police information cited on Belgian radio.

The outcome of the other police search operations was not made public, nor was there any confirmed link with last week’s attacks in Paris which left 20 people dead. But Van Der Sypt said that Belgium’s terror alert for the security forces had been raised to its second-highest level.

Witnesses in Verviers said they heard a series of explosions, which started at 5.45pm, and then sustained gunfire.

what if he was drawing cartoons... you say everyone has a right to FREEDOM OF SPEECH>.no matter what... its the principle..

whom would I surrender too... just because I agree the cartoon was rude and insulting and should not have been printed........

if my grandkids life was at stake....I would have no hesitation in removing that cartoon..

why would I think any different if it meant the 12 staff at Charlie Hebdo would  NOT BE KILLED...a life is a life..

a cartoon isnt worth 12 lives not to me....

we shall watch the outcome of the second coming of Charlie Hebdo I believe something like 700.000 more copies  are going out.. you must be thrilled.......

The cartoons are one part of this.

There is something greater than that, and that is Islamo facist bullies who want to strike hard enough into the western world, whether through co ordinated attacks or inspiring lone wolf attacks.

To neutralize the western world through fear, and it seems they have succeeded through you. and all it does is encourage them to do more since they made GROUND WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

I dont think anybody should mock religion, but the lefties love it, and they would use free speech to express it, even though i wouldnt recommend it,
