Civilised people.

What the hell is a civilised person or state. Individuals who are civilised, I need to meet some of them. once their child had died of drug overdose by traffickers who could not give a stuff. Or had someone they love murdered or raped and left lifeless by the side of the road by a drug user, high on whatever it is now day, crack. Possibly these civilised people may not be quite as forgiving. I believe the Romans an Greeks 2000 years ago were civilised, as were the Muslims. Their philosophy, buildings, paintings, inspiring. 2000 years ago they killed like it was going out of fashion.
Hence being civilised equals no more death penalty, just slaughter a nation, start a war. I think the Chinese consider themselves civilised. 1500 years ago when the British where still in the stone age living in huts, the Chinese built cites, had laws, gunpowder. Hence being civilised means something else, not sure what, possibly being weak. To many do gooders have taken over the country and leave it wide open to be invaded.

Personally I don't agree with prisoners sitting around for 9 years in prison waiting to be shot.

If found guilty - execute them as soon as possible.

Wei Qingan (Chinese: 魏清安, ?-1984, 23 years old): a Chinese citizen who was executed for the rape of Liu, a woman who had disappeared. The execution was carried out on 3 May 1984 by the Intermediate People's court. In the next month, Tian Yuxiu (田玉修) was arrested and admitted that he had committed the rape. Three years later, Wei was officially declared innocent.

Teng Xingshan (Chinese: 滕兴善, ?-1989): a Chinese citizen who was executed for supposedly having raped, robbed and murdered Shi Xiaorong (石小荣), a woman who had disappeared. An old man found a dismembered body, and incompetent police forensics claimed to have matched the body to the photo of the missing Shi Xiaorong. The execution was carried out on 28 January 1989 by the Huaihua Intermediate People's court. In 1993, the previously missing woman returned to the village, saying she had been kidnapped to Shandong. The absolute innocence of the wrongfully executed Teng was not admitted until 2005.

Nie Shubin (Chinese: 聂树斌, 1974-1995): a Chinese citizen who was executed for the rape and murder of Kang Juhua (康菊花), a woman in her thirties. The execution was carried out on April 27, 1995 by the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's court. In 2005, ten years after the execution, Wang Shujin (Chinese: 王书金) admitted to the police that, in fact, he had committed the murder.

Even in South Australia a few yeas ago a murder trial of a young girl was abandoned after the supposed victim walked into court.  We may have not have the DP but we still have the incompetent police and sometimes unbelieveably stupid court system that can attempt to convict someone of a crime they don't even have evidence took place.

they were smuggling Heroin which would have killed someone else's child.. they couldn't care less if it did and nor do I care less that they get executed...

and if anyone says that its not a deterrent then they'd be a halfwit..

If it's a deterrent, why did they do it?

Because they didn't think they would get caught in Indonesia, and the penalties for getting caught in Australia was worth the risk of becoming rich overnight.

It's a great deterrent in that they won't be doing this sort of thing again.

And then again, the law is all about punishment - not deterrence. Our courts are there to punish. The law itself is the deterrent, and if people choose to ignore that warning, then be it on their own head.

It doesn't deter other criminals.

If it did, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

If the DP were a deterrent then states that use it would see a drop in capital crimes except the opposite is true.  The very best result obtained is NO CHANGE.  Only in USA is that reason to continue.  Only in the USA is the existence of compelling new evidence pointing to innocence inadmissaable in a capital case after appeals nor a reason for delaying an execution.

DP supporters are by and large, bloodthirsty or gullible. Or often, both.

I would also say totally inexperienced in the world of death.  If faced with such a decision themselves I doubt any would be capable of carrying out a death sentence.

I, for one, could not....and am happy to admit to that.
