Breaking news : Greste released by Egypt.
Feb 2nd, 2015 at 12:17am

The BBC is reporting that Australian journalist has been pardoned by President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi following pressure from external Governments - including the EU and Australia.

Sisi is to use a law brought in allowing him to remove prisoners who are not Egyptian citizens and to deport them immediately.
The Sydney born Journalist was jailed under terrorist offence charges of helping and assisting the Muslim Brotherhood.

Greste once deported would be banned from returning to Egypt for life. Terms Australia is believed to have accepted on his behalf.

There was no comment regarding the fate of his two Egyptian colleagues at Al Jazeera also jailed.

And not before time, if true.

Hope the two Egyptians with him get a fair go too, though it's doubtful.

That's good. It must be sheer hell to spend any time in an Egyptian jail, let alone 400 days.

Apparently given the improving relationship between Egypt and Qatar it was proving an embarrassment to al-Sisi to have a western Al Jazeera journalist in Egypt's jails.

That plus continued pressure from Egypt's western allies caused this decision.

It is indeed, good to hear that Greste is now free, free at last, after some 400 days in Goal, on what were trumped up, Politically motivated charges!

It should also follow that, the other two, who are still in goal, should also be released and the others, who were convicted in absentia, should also have their convictions overturned!

I've got a feeling Julie Bishop might take some credit on this. She is like a little terrier with a ragdoll.

I just hope the guy has the sense to stay away from Egypt and such like in future.

I believe though PN that Greste did not have his conviction overturned rather Sisi used a law allowing him to commute his sentence as a foreign national to immediate deportation from Egypt.

So the chances of his Egyptian colleagues who are not able to be deported as foreigners?
None too good I'd say...

Nonsense.

His reporting was soft on the Far Rightwing Morsi and his Islamic extremist supporters.

As a propagandist on their behalf he was quite correctly put in the slammer after the coup that brought a moderate government to power.

Malcolm Turnbull let it be known in an interview today that it was the American Government that had ordered Greste's release  -  after lobbying by the Australian Government.

Obviously the $1billion per year that the US pays directly to the Egyptian military dictatorship buys some influence.

Abbott promised no tax hikes & no cuts to the ABC

There's a 'budget emergency', so we will give $9 billion to the Reserve Bank, spend $12 billion on some dubious jets, $2 billion to bomb Iraq, etc.

Yes, as per comments by Malcolm Turnbull saying how the Australian Government had lobbied the US to get Greste released.

Je suis der Sturmer, why do you find it necessary to change your ID every 5 minutes.

It's pretty much the same as walking around with a mask on. Do you do that as well?

So, the very same should happen to Murdoch for doing precisely the
same thing here, then, once we regain a moderate govt?
