"FORMER deputy premier and leader of the Victorian National party Peter Ryan is retiring from politics.

THE long-serving Gippsland South MP led the Nationals from 1999 to 2014, stepping down when the Liberal National coalition lost government.

Mr Ryan said he made his decision after careful consideration over Christmas and the New Year and discussing the matter with his wife Trisha and their children.
Now was the best time to stand down and give his replacement in Gippsland a chance to succeed, he told reporters on Monday.
Mr Ryan said he had truly believed the coalition would win the November 2014 election."

Be interesting to see his retirement package, wouldn't it

Sickening the way they usually include the fact they've discussed the fact they can grab their taxpayer-funded windfall for nothing with their 'wife and children'

talk about delusions of grandeur

When do we hear genuine workers cited in the media as 'discussing their forced redundancy with their wife (named) and children.  And where's their retirement package

The lifelong gravy-train for scum politicians has to stop.  If we stopped paying them to live in comfort-plus, we could afford to build as many hospitals and schools as we need

I'll say this for Ryan ... he's left the National party leadership on his own terms, and will leave politics the same way.

A curious point of difference between the Nationals and Liberals - and Labor for that matter - the Nationals never seem to be bedeveilled by leadership questions. Probably because the leader of the Nationals has no real power, nobody really wants the job.

I suppose the leader of the Nats becomes the deputy PM/Premier in government, and therefore becomes the liberals bitch. You have to tow the liberal party line and you can't effectively represent your national party constituents. Someone like Barnaby Joyce on the other hand has far more freedom to speak out for the interests of his party.
