Adam Giles rolled as Chief Minister
Feb 3rd, 2015 at 1:18am

Quote:
Adam Giles replaced as Northern Territory chief minister, Willem Westra van Holte elected leader

Willem Westra van Holthe is the new leader and John Elferink is the new deputy.

The news came after reports that Mr Giles narrowly avoided a leadership challenge last week and earlier on Monday senior government ministers were hosing down any suggestion of another attempt.

The potential challengers last week counted the numbers and believed they had achieved the majority needed to replace Mr Giles but backed out at the last moment, the ABC was told.

Mr Giles told the ABC earlier on Monday he had not heard his leadership was under imminent threat but said he had heard "rumblings from time to time".

"While you're in the position of Chief Minister or anything else where you have the opportunity of advancing the interests of the Northern Territory and Territorians, it's a pretty honourable position to be in," he said.

"And while you're there you do what you can, and when you're not there you reflect on the opportunities that you seized and probably some that you let go."

There had been concern within the parliamentary wing about Mr Giles's leadership style, his personal judgment, his handling of the scandal surrounding former police commissioner John McRoberts and his ability to communicate the Government's strategy to the public.

Mr McRoberts resigned last month amid claims he interfered in a criminal investigation in which he had a conflict of interest. He denied the conflict of interest allegations.

Mr Giles secured the NT's top job in March 2013 after wrestling the leadership from Terry Mills, who swept the Country Liberals into office in August 2012 after 11 years in opposition.

NT Chief Minister rolled

It would appear the Liberals are getting spooked. The only stable Liberal government in the country is Western Australia.

Will Tony be feeling the pressure?

WA does not have an election due until 2017. That government is the only one that has no election scheduled during the term of the Federal government. That has to add some stability.

Barnett isn't safe. His approval ratings have declined in the past year to levels that suggest he may be replaced.

You have also overlooked Tasmania, which has a new Liberal government that to my knowledge hasn't made any damaging mistakes yet. Of all the remaining Coalition governments, I expect the Liberal government in Tasmania to last the longest.

The interview on Seven this morning was quite telling with Abbott obviously dodging questions on the leadership.

Attempting to remove the right to protest is a pretty big mistake in MY book.

As for this morning's interview - I couldn't watch it all. Too much BS.

I turned off once he started obfuscating to the question about the Bishop incident.

He's an abject idiot, and Kochie wasn't nearly hard enough on him.

I overlooked that. Thank you for mentioning it.

Tasmania haven't done anything as abysmally bad though as choose a bad leader, unlike the Coalition in NSW, Victoria, the Northern Territory (twice) and Federally. Unlike these state leaders, Abbott hasn't been replaced yet, but it's only a matter of time. Barnett in WA could be in trouble too.

I thought this was the party that stays loyal to its leaders and does not do internal chaos.  The BS they tell us, honestly.

Really?

Can't say I'd noticed that.

Although they do seem to be a bit better than some of the other neo-con slime-balls who are or have recently been in power.

Watch Tones do something to scupper the NSW Lib campaign. Can’t keep him out of NSW—that is where he lives. Hmmm some judicious leaks, true or not, about the Budget?

Will happen even if Tones has been knifed.
