When has there never been racial animosity to wards Chinese in Australia?

Describing Sing's treatment ...

"... There was considerable anti-Chinese sentiment in Australia at this time..."

During the gold rush days the colonies made special laws against the chinese to try and stop them coming over to our gold fields. It didn't work though.

I have always wondered if there are Australians today who are related to those chinese that came over here in the 19th century. Although I guess after all these generations they probably wouldn't even look asian any more.

It didn't have to work. The closet poms bashed and killed Chinese and the closet poms Hydraulic Jacks stole their mines.

Seeing Poms were about the only sizeable group in Oz at the time .....

Anyway, the Aborigines ate the Chinese, according to history once taught in Australian schools.  Apparently, Chinese are tastier than whites, although can't speak from experience

Had me a Maori mate once - he was chatting about a Japanese resort on the North Island - he reckoned they'd make good eating when things got tough - nice rice-fed little bastards....

Know quite a few Chinese descended families... especially in FNQ.

Many are as Chinese looking as their forebears ... others are a fine eurasian mix.

Mind you during the Palmer River Gold Rush days they were the preferred tucker of Aboriginals ..... Long Pig .... less salty than white men.  Grin
