Teachers that can't read/write will not graduate

According to the Minister for education.

That statement says it all. It appears that Australia has been enabling teachers with inadequate literacy and numeracy skills. That is a disgrace!

Is it already too late?

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/education/low-skilled-teachers-...

Quote:
“Those that don’t have an initial teaching course program that teaches initial teachers reading and writing and numeracy, and how to identify children with learning disabilities, will not be accredited,” he said. “No teacher will be graduating from university if they can’t read and write themselves adequately.

“It is a crime we have been graduating young teachers in that position.”

You've only just found out about this? You must either be very young, in which case it's understandable, or have been asleep for the last 40 years.

The last generation of teachers for whom literacy was a sine qua non are just retiring now. This is not to say that many young teachers are not competent today, but it is despite their education & training, not because of it.

If a high proportion of teachers cannot communicate accurately, which includes correct spelling and grammar, it follows that they will have difficulty passing on information.

Which brings me to the 'Possessive Apostrophe'.

Who was the lazy mongrel teacher that couldn't even be bothered to read his own text books?

When I left school, early '60s, it was known as the Principals
'
Office.
Now it's the Principal
'
s Office.

Take the Sailors' Home in The Rocks, Sydney, built in 1865.

Quote:
Sailors' Home Sydney is a building once used by seaman and later as a prison in Sydney, Australia. Sailors used the home until 1980, but the building now houses Sailor's Thai Restaurant.

The building's 150th anniversary is to be celebrated by the committee established to build and operate the home in Sydney.

Even Wiki......shakes head.

And don't get me started on meters-squared and square metres symbols used today......

Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Spellcheck and calculators have made teachers redundant, now they have nothing better to do than indoctrinate students into being left wing drones.

There's no issue here, unless, of course, there was only one principal using the office in the 1960s and multiple uses of the office now.

(..whereas in reality they are simply teaching kids to automatically roll their eyes at real-estate pwning franchise shills just as the private school kiddies are taught at home !)

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

And there was more than one sailor called this building 'home'.
