I always thought DRAH was interesting. Wonder whatever happened to him he does not seem to be around much anymore.

I remember one of the Mods didn't like him for some reason.

He's still here.

I don't even try to keep up - a different name to me is a different person: in this case he not only changed his ID but also his personality seems different ?

Ok so you are trilingual also.

UMMM quick question Andrei, isn't Afrikaans really Dutch or is it a  Dutch dialect?

It's very similar.
It has differing words and Dutch has more words. But yes I can read and speak it in the Netherlands and be fine.

It sounds a little childish in the Netherlands - like Dutch with bad grammar. The words for us and we are both ons(e) for example, compare with we and onz(e).

It may as well be regarded as a regional dialect then. Yes?

Well Afrikaans was only established as a language in its own right in the early 20th century. Prior to that it was regarded as a Dutch dialect.

Kaapse Afrikaans, which they speak in Capetown and the Western Cape, is much closer to standard Dutch.

Interestingly enough, it's easier for a Dutch speaker to understand Afrikaans than the other way about.

Hmm interesting.

All the Sth Africans I've ever dealt with professionally have had close links to the UK in terms of education/training. They've also been Jewish.

Just an observation.

Anyway, many thanks for that info John  Smiley

I like Emma Peel.

Why?

She always has something interesting and/or controversial to offer.

She also has the humility to offer an apology if/when required.

Rhino's another good peep.

He talks sense.

And I enjoy reading what he has to say.
