Three bombs were found at the upmarket home and a 300m exclusion zone put in place as they were detonated in a nearby reserve.

The latest raids follow the arrest of two teenagers last month who are suspected of planning a terror attack on Anzac Day.

Two 17-year-olds from Melbourne, one the son of the doctor, were involved in the second major counter-terrorism swoop in four weeks to foil plans for an attack, believed to be imminent.

A source said the age of at least one of those involved presented a “disturbing” new development in the growing national security threat of Islamic State-inspired homegrown terrorism.

The raid in Sydney was conducted as a lower profile operation to previous ones because of sensitivity around the young age of the suspect.

The source confirmed the Melbourne teenagers were alleged to have been in the process of planning an attack. It is also believed there were links to previous Sydney raids. No charges have yet been laid.

NSW Premier Mike Baird was briefed on the counter-terror operation on Thursday at a meeting with Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione and his deputy Cath Burn.

Special Operation Group officers armed with machine-guns launched the Victorian raid in north Melbourne.

Neighbours reported hearing what sounded like gunshots as police stormed the property.

Residents were being escorted to and from their homes as bomb squad officers discovered and then removed explosive material from the house.

One “person of interest” was arrested by police during the operation, which was led by the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police with assistance from Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

AFP spokeswoman Catherine Bennett yesterday said: “Victoria Police and the AFP is conducting a police operation in the Northern Metropolitan area of Melbourne this afternoon.

“As this relates to an ongoing investigation, it is not appropriate to comment further.”

A spokesman for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service said: “Immigration and Border Protection is working with its partner agencies on this matter.”

Two officers in bomb disposal suits spent nearly an hour thoroughly sweeping the double-storey brick house.

As darkness fell, the lights remained on in the home and specialist officers could be seen on the top floor.

I hope that I am wrong, but I think there will be another attack here soon, and Muslim scum will kill innocent victims. I still think about Tori and Katrina. Two innocent and beautiful people who had their lives so senselessly taken from them. And their poor families, the pain that they must have been enduring since.

I clearly remember saying to my husband around 30 ago, and other family members, that we should not let these scum in here. Muslims are barbaric scum who should be made to stay where they are and not immigrate to other parts of the world.

Look at the amount of Middle Eastern Christians who immigrate (and actually assimilate) because of the problems in their own country.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about a Saudi Arabian man who was legally murdered simply for converting to Christianity.

Sprintcyclist, it is because the left wing loves all things Muslim and hates all things Jewish and Christian. The ABC didn't even mention the word 'Muslim' once in their coverage of the terrible massacre in Kenya, where 148 innocent people were killed just because they were Christian.
