Mr Hockey's tongue might get him tied
Jun 4th, 2015 at 2:22pm

"Treasurer Joe Hockey is not backing down on his harsh judgment of anyone talking about a looming recession.

A day after he labelled economic doomsayers "clowns", he has told ABC radio "they're complete fools"." AAP

As Mandy Rice Davies famously said, "He would say that wouldn't he".

You'd think he'd be smarter than to commit himself to predictions that are beyond his capacity to know.
Otherwise he could find himself having to use the Keating defence: this is the recession we had to have.
And he doesn't have Keating's superb éclat to pull it off.

Indeed ...

Hockey’s asked whether there is any wriggle room on reducing the generosity of super concessions ahead of the coming election. The treasurer says the government has made it clear there will be nothing this term.

Q: What about a second term?

Hockey: We’ve got no plans for a second term.

That wasn't a defence. He actually meant it.
As for Hockey. What else can he say.

One thing you'll notice is that the Americans had their inflation under control a full decade before we did.

...

...

Much of this is due to the monetary policy of US federal reserve chairman, Paul Volker. His policy was essentially to reduce the money supply causing interests rates to rise. It worked very well. All Keating had to do was wait for the next recession and do the same thing with pretty much the same result. That is, inflation stomped on the head never to return to the previous high levels.

the head of the fed is going to start raising interest rates at the end of the year.
the funny money will dry up, wall st will sneeze and we'll catch cold.
our dollar will drop and our current account will worsen.
we will be in a better position to export...but export what??

all we have is land and fixed assets and these will become cheaper with a falling dollar.

we will pay for all those schools and hospitals by selling income producing assets.

welcome to the white trash of asia.

Aqua, if interest rates do rise, the dollar is certain to rise in value with it.

the US rates will go up, the US dollar will go up and ours (as it floats) will go down.
or we will raise them as well and the housing mortgage bubble will be under stress.

He could stop the ad hominem attacks and make some remarks about the soundness of the economy.

That really depends on the US outcomes. In general, an interest rate rise is caused by reducing the money supply via the RBA's open market operations. With fewer dollars around, like anything else shortened on the supply side, the price will rise.

In recent times our dollar has fallen as interest rates have fallen ( or expected to fall ).

Yes Bogey, since the GFC forces out of the control of the Australian Government have seen growth plummet, yet we see politicians telling us they can fix it with domestic policy which is complete rubbish.

Hockey has not impressed anyone since becoming treasurer. His star has fallen faster than anyone else in Government. Whilst global conditions remain volatile Hockey might well see himself on the back bench as the fall guy.

Huh Huh Huh
