................By far the most visible component of the costs was the shift from a budget cash surplus, averaging 0.9 per cent of gross domestic product during the Howard years to a cash deficit that exceeded 4 per cent of GDP in 2010.

Associated with a succession of economic stimulus measures, that deterioration proved difficult to reverse, with the commonwealth's balance sheet shifting from $44.8bn in net assets when Rudd took office to $161.6bn in net debt this year..................

we were immune from the gfc.

It is all hypothetical as to what happens if Kevin Rudd didn't do what he did.  People, experts, organisations can all demonstrate that their hypotheses are right with regards to what if or if not whatever happen in the past.  Focus on the right now - what is the economy doing now and what constructive elements has the current government put in play?  Does it need to be re-evaluated?  Is it evidence-based?  Measurable effects?

The only problem an ALP supporter would have with this is the fact that its not 500 billion, or even 1000 billion, big deficits weaken countries and weakening countries is what the idiot left is all about, Greece being one of their biggest success stories.

we were immune from the gfc.

we had no debt and china were still buying our resources.
We were fine,

Now, we have a large debt (due to the alp) and china are not buying our resources.
We are in trouble.

yes.

The asian crisis many years ago loomed much worse.
We weathered that with nary a blip.

Things like this happen in economies.  You need a steady hand on the tiller and a long term view.
