I'm pretty sure Longy isn't going to support a 72 yr old grandma who should have and could have retired 7 yrs ago.

I'm pretty sure you are wrong ... he's been asked the question a dozen times in the past week and has refused to give a direct answer.

You're a rightie Lisa, do you support Bishop as speaker?

We've already got an Abbott as Prime Minister.

We don't need a Bishop as Speaker.

In any event, we have a spare Bishop as our Foreign Affairs Minister

What do you think this is....the freaking Catholic Church?

Yeah and you know why?

Had he stayed, we would have had Abbott and Costello in charge of the country.

Now that would have been a joke.

Quote:
Hansard stats show that ALL speakers favour the government of the day.

This would make sense as the Government is generally on the defense and the Opposition on attack, often the Opposition will overstep the boundaries of what is a relevant question and go into a theatrical attack which would be right to get called on.

The problem is Bishop is just such a flat out partisan hack it is insane and that is when she barely gets the basics behind being a speaker correct. Bishop isn't only partisan, she's flat out incompetent in the role for a whole myriad of reasons (which has now becoming a running joke in Question Time in itself)

Should we follow the UK and make it mandatory that all speakers sever all party ties? I think it's a good start although forcing them to sever ties doesn't make them any less biased.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-07-21/earl-bishop-should-follow-britains-lead-an...

If Bronwyn Bishop wishes to remain Speaker, she should sever links with the Liberal Party. And our Parliament should follow Britain's lead and make this move mandatory for future speakers, writes Chris Earl.

The problem with incumbents of the speaker's chair in Australia's House of Representatives is that they are beholden to party machines that determine their tenure as the nation's number one standard bearer for the democratic ideals of the nation

It won't make any difference with regard to bias. The only option is to make the role non-political by making it a job for which ordinary citizens can apply and are selected based upon merit by a panel of parliamentary officers, not politicians. It's the only way to make it unbiased.
