A common practice is for people to pick through atrocities committed by people who purportedly were muslim and declare Islam as the common denominator.

Here's a novel exercise: can anyone see any 'common denominator' between the three individuals mentioned above? Does it change the way we view these 'common denominators?' Is it possible to say that in this case all three were affected by their mental illness, and that therefore in the one case of the muslim - Islam shouldn't be cited as the cause?

Is it possible that it can be misleading to sift through and find all the perpetrators who have an association with Islam - and in the process ignore other commonalities they may have had with other mass murderers - which may better explain their behaviour?

Put simply, can it be misleading, or even wrong to hold up two (or more) separate atrocities committed by muslims and declare "Islam is the common denominator - therefore Islam to blame"?

All three suffered from either a mental illness or mental retardation (Bryant). Islam is a secondary matter as far as motivation for their crimes when compared to the mental turmoil they suffered from because of their illness/treatment. Of course, because they were Muslim, it is their religion which gets picked by the Islamophobes as to the cause of their actions. However, when a Christian commits a crime and they are mentally ill, it is the mental illness that is understood to be their motivator, rather than their religion.

Actually only one of them was muslim.

The point I am making is that to claim that the Chatanooga shooting was caused by mental illness would be ridiculed as spinelessly apologising for Islam from some quarters. And the explanation given would be to point out all the other muslim atrocities and link this shooter with them - sarcastically asking "whats the common denominator here?" Yet these people wouldn't think to apply the same logic if he is linked with other mass murderers who are not muslim - but share a different commonality with him. Its not that I'm saying that either Islam or mental illness should be definitely ruled in or out as the primary cause - its explaining why pointing to something other than Islam when a muslim is involved shouldn't be dismissed out of hand has spineless apologism for Islam. Especially since it applies the exact same logic as those use to insist Islam is the cause.

Bryant is in Risdon Prison, Hobart. It is not a Psychiatric Prison, it is the standard prison for ordinary inmates. AIUI he resides in the Hospital Wing of the prison because the other prisoners have a record of picking on him.

Many people with mental illnesses can organise very well thought out and planned crimes. There is often no limits to their thinking, except in the more extreme cases. I'm sure Soren would concur with that (if he was honest). As a Psychiatrist friend once explained it to me - they are thinking logically, to them, it just is illogical to everybody else! Roll Eyes

Islam is often a haven for those with emotional and mental problems because it offers organisation and structure - things that they crave and which ordinary life does not offer. That they take to heart the more extreme elements of that religion is not unusual. That they act upon those thoughts, is. Roll Eyes
