Sorry.....if I can get a cab for half the normal fare.....I'm in.
Free market, is it?
Although, I do feel sorry for the cabbies that are left with a white elephant.
Short term gain will be long term pain, Dame Pansi. If what Uber is attempting works, and it destroys the taxi industry, how long do you reckon they will continue to offer reduced fares? They do not reduce their fares now in peak periods, and in fact, raise them beyond what taxis charge in those times. You might also remember how they spiked their fares when the Mons Siege was under way, for further example.
Further, who do you reckon is gonna take Granny home from the Woolies rank after loading her groceries for her, and delivering them to her front door. Uber? Not on your life. They aren't interested in that end of the market, which we serve day in and day out. All they want is the cherry pick. Well....think about how that will play out. If Taxis disappear......Granny walks home....if she can, that is.
Who do you reckon is gonna take the wheel chair bound around like our Maxis do? Uber? Don't be stupid. They are cherry picking, remember? So when the Taxis go, the wheel chair bound can push themselves around...if they can, that is.
And what about the disabled, the 'Endeavour Foundation' type customer. You know, those we pick up every week day and take to where they work. All for the massive reward of around an average of $10.00 for half an hour including delay at pick up, the trip and then the delay at drop off. Uber, nah....they don't want to know about them. They want the cherry pick.
Careful what you wish for.
