The addictive K-pop mega-hit song "Oh!" by Girls' Generation hopped up an unlikely audience in the dark nights of August.

The South Korean military broadcast the girl group's music and other K-pop songs to front-line North Korean soldiers, in what could be termed a K-pop counterattack last month in retaliation for the blasts of North Korea's land mines that maimed two South Korean soldiers earlier in August.

The dance song was a proven success among young South Korean military conscripts with its sweet calling of "oppa," the Korean term for older brother or lover, and it may have worked as well for the North Korean equivalents, dramatizing life over the border and disillusioning them about their communist country and leader Kim Jong-un.
