▪■■ Calling All Fishermen ■■▪
Sep 8th, 2015 at 10:47am

I posted this elsewhere but it's more of a chat topic really.

Where in/around NSW can you catch good fish these days?

Oh and preferably somewhere where it won't take an entire day just to catch one fish.

I also need to know what to do with a fish after I've caught him. Do I just throw him in a bucket of water and take him home? Or do I gut him there and then? What's safer?

Also, what is the easiest way to gut a fish? Right now, using my little/no knowledge on the matter, I assume you 1st cut off his head then cut across the scales to produce 2 fillets. But don't they have guts also etc?

Sorry for the many questions. I just want to catch a big beautiful fish for my mum. (She will then show me how to cook it the Greek way which will make her day complete)  Smiley

Hi Lisa,

all jokes aside, buy one from a fish market.
Not woolies.
You can buy whole fish at a shop that specializes in fresh fish.
They'll gut it for you. Gauge the freshness by the eyes.

It'll be a great success.
It'll be very nice fish.
It'll be much cheaper then trying to catch your own.
(and a guaranteed 'catch' too)

Ha!

So basically I should lie to her about catching it, make her think I did, then get her to show me how to cook it her way. I was thinking of that too....ya know..just to make her day.

I really need to know now...are you saying fishing is not worth all the trouble?

Think of all that fresh free fish out there just waiting to be caught.

We don't need permits or anything like that do we?  We're not commercially fishing.

re

I am not a big fan of fishing, its quiet boring.  I would suggest a fish farm, then you only need to spend minimal amount of time holding on to the rod.   Smiley  Afterall the main purpose is to catch one for your mum right.

If you are into recreational fishing, then it depends on what type of fish.  My grandpa used to take me to Port Macquaire lake systems.   And you can catch nice flatheads there, along with small ?brimes (spelling) which often or not you need to throw back.   For bait you can buy them at the tackle shops, or you can use a suction ... thing... to get pippies (spelling).   But if you as impatient as I am, just put a BBQ or KFC chicken carcass into a crab net, and see what happens after 1 hour.   Grin

You can also go deep sea fishing charters.  The one time I did, I think I fed the fish more than the fish fed me...   But, nevertheless, its easy with a charter, because they have these radars, and its really easy.  And they also gut and clean up the fish for you in the end if they feel sorry for you.   Smiley

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I like your tip about KFC chicken as bait. You reckon it really works eh?

Flathead, bream, snapper ... all my Mum's faves.

There's got to be somewhere in NSW, where you can throw your line into the water and catch one of these fish....quickly.

No? Not anymore?

Anyway...

If you want to travel down to the Gong, there are lots of great fishing spots off the rock platforms that are jotted up and down the coast. You can also get some decent fish in Lake Illawarra. I'd suggest you make a day off it and go on a fishing charter. Take the kids (if they're old enough), they'll love it ... just make sure you take sea sickness tablets at least 30 mins BEFORE you get on the boat.

Do be wary if you go off the rock platforms, it's considered the most dangerous sport on earth for a reason. Pick a nice day with a small swell, and even then you need to be constantly alert for freak waves. So many people get washed off and drown .

Or go to a fish market on the way home, spend $30 getting a whole fish, have them gut it, bring it home wrapped in paper and say "Look what I got !"

Have the fishmonger throw the fish to you. Then you can honestly say that  you caught it...

I had cod and chips in London it was my must do when I returned.. SUPER FOOD it was smashing I can tell you....and no we didnt catch it...

I have had fresh caught trout it also was smashing...I know fresh caught is best... but as I said no guantees you will catch something you come home filthy dirty smelly cranky usually wet and cold...a lot poorer...and with an empty bucket.\

well thats my experience I do catch throwbacks..and thats about it...in ACT is usually carp and no one eats them...and no we dont throw them back.
