Ah.

I've been reading up on your family....

Apparently Cod is an endangered species.

Did you know that?

I don't like the sound of that.

I want fresh fish.

Hey John, whilst you're here, does one need to get a license just to go fishing?

If NSW is like most states, licences are required for inland fisheries, not beach fishing or the like.

Edit: wow. NSW all fishing requires a licence.

Unless exempted.

yes ... you'll get one at any fishing tackle shop and fairly cheap. Unless you use a charter, in which case the skipper will have the license.

I see.

Hmmmm.

I'm now thinking I might go the charter route, coz the skipper pays for the fishing license and I get to FINALLY go fishing with people who know what they're doing.

Cost of a charter vs cost of a fishing license.

Big difference?

Sorry....I know I'm asking a lot of questions.

One day, I'd love to be able to log into OzPol and say : Hey everyone I finally went fishing and caught a fish.

And then post a pic of me with a little sardine looking thing at the end of my fishing rod lol  Tongue

Charter boats are great Lisa. Just take your seasick tablets. Palm Beach has some good charter boats that go offshore. It's best to wait until summer and into autumn. That's the best time to fish. Cheers. Smiley Smiley Smiley

Jolly good.  Can you please make sure that the photo includes a handwritten sign on a bit of cardboard or similar, addressed to me, saying....."Bite me Aussie.  This is not a tamagotchi fish, and it is for my tamagotchi Mum."

Thanks in advance.

I posted this elsewhere but it's more of a chat topic really.

Where in/around NSW can you catch good fish these days?

Oh and preferably somewhere where it won't take an entire day just to catch one fish.

I also need to know what to do with a fish after I've caught him. Do I just throw him in a bucket of water and take him home? Or do I gut him there and then? What's safer?

Also, what is the easiest way to gut a fish? Right now, using my little/no knowledge on the matter, I assume you 1st cut off his head then cut across the scales to produce 2 fillets. But don't they have guts also etc?

Sorry for the many questions. I just want to catch a big beautiful fish for my mum. (She will then show me how to cook it the Greek way which will make her day complete)  Smiley

The further north the better, unless you live between Sydney and Wolloongong.

I often make a single cut to take the head, pec fins and stomach (ribs etc) off in one go, then scoop any remaining guts out. That is for when I plan to bake it whole. The sooner the better. Kill the fish as soon as possible. Putting it on ice is more important than gutting it ASAP. Don't bother gutting if you intend to fillet.

If there are yabbies around, get a bait pump and use them for bait to get bream and whiting on light, unweighted gear. It will keep things interesting.
