but as I said no guantees you will catch something you come home filthy dirty smelly
that's WHY you go fishing
the fish are just a fringe benefit
I don't like the sound of that.
I want fresh fish.
Hey John, whilst you're here, does one need to get a license just to go fishing?
yes ... you'll get one at any fishing tackle shop and fairly cheap. Unless you use a charter, in which case the skipper will have the license.
I see.
Hmmmm.
I'm now thinking I might go the charter route, coz the skipper pays for the fishing license and I get to FINALLY go fishing with people who know what they're doing.
Cost of a charter vs cost of a fishing license. Big difference?
Sorry....I know I'm asking a lot of questions.
One day, I'd love to be able to log into OzPol and say : Hey everyone I finally went fishing and caught a fish.
And then post a pic of me with a little sardine looking thing at the end of my fishing rod lol
Not sure what a license costs in NSW these days, last time I checked it was about $20 - $25 ... but that was years ago. FD might be able to give you more info.
A charter will depend on the boat. If you want the whole boat, you'll be looking at anywhere from $800 - $1000 (again, that was a few years ago). If you go with a group of 8 to 10 mates, it's not bad for a day out.
You can also join existing charters if they have room, but the price will depend o how many are already on the boat (the day rate gets divided by the number of people on the charter).
Some boats may also charge more for game fishing because of the extra fuel required. You need to decide if you are going bottom bashing (you'll almost always catch something on a charter) or game fishing. Can be boring if the fish aren't running, but the adrenaline pumps when you hit a school of tuna or hook a marlin. You can spend all day out and not hook anything when game fishing.
For your first charter, I'd recommend bottom bashing. Also, don't pack bananas. It's a superstition and I've heard some skippers will turn back to shore and cancel the whole day if you pull out a banana, it's supposed to be bad luck.
Whatever you decide, enjoy. It's a great way to relax and unwind.
