CNN)A stampede during one of the last rituals of the Hajj season -- the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca -- has killed more than 700 people and injured close to 900 others in Saudi Arabia.

This is entirely the fault of the Saudi authorities who simply refused to learn from past mistakes.

The way to prevent these crushes is by installing scores of steel-tubed barriers every few metres so that no more than a dozen people in any one place can move forward.

The Brits had to learn this the hard way at their football venues where many were suffocated by crowds surging forward down the viewing stands.

...

I don't doubt that many of those poor souls were good and decent people who lived to humanitarian and Christian values under the guise of Islam.

Heads should roll for the criminal negligence that allowed this to happen.

God lord! Are you STILL stalking me?!

Didn't you say you are tertiary-educated? Let's hear something from you about the subject matter instead of little jabs and pokes of a personal nature.

Well Herbie, once you post some "subject matter" that is not:

1. racist
2. sexist
3. homophobic
4. misogynistic
5. xenophobic

then I might consider it.

Hey, I'm only playing down to your level.

Thank you Herb and i concur heartily with your sentiments. This is not because of fanatisism its because 2 million people were in one place without adequate controls. As the abc correspondent said this morning this event happens wvery year so it is a very predictable potential disaster. According to reports it was caused by one crowd taking the "wrong" path and converging with another crowd coming the other way. The Saudis excuse is that they were told not to go that way. Well sorry, not good enough - why weren't they physically prevented from going?  Heads should role over this - starting from the minister in charge. Yet initial statements from the government are already stating that no one from the government is to blame. What a joke. Blind freddy can see this was a gigantic, and very predictable, cock-up by the government.

Exactly.

It's totally inexcusable.

I hope the relatives of the deceased sue the Saudi government into bankruptcy over this awful tragedy that has cost so many innocent lives. How awful for the families back home to have to learn that their loved ones aren't coming home.

In my other life I had good friends who had done the hajj, and others who were yet to make the pilgrimage.
