Buying a new stove/oven.
Sep 28th, 2015 at 12:53pm

What would you guys opt for....an electric or gas stove? And why?

Have been online since last night trying to find something decent in terms of quality and price.

I can't get past the above questions though.

Also, can anyone here recommend a brand?

I love gas- but .some are a bit scared of gas. I have an electric now and they are cleaner and you dont have to worry about running out of gas. Of course you might be lucky enough to have a gas mains that runs past your house. Gas gives and instant heat and is fanatstic for things like stir fries etc..when you need a high quick heat. They both have pros and cons, my preference for cooking is gas but for convenience- electric.

Agreed gas does give the instant heat but I wouldn't be using bottled gas I'd try for natural gas. Changing bottles should only be for BBQ's outdoors.

If you have mains gas then I'd go with that. Personally I prefer gas but I suppose it is what you are used to using. One of the major benefits of gas is that it still works when the power is off - can be a problem during cyclones.

An oven that injects steam will be great for baking bread!

Interesting.

It is to do with what is called “oven spring” the quick, early rise of the bread in the oven. Steam keeps the dough moist so it can expend, the same reason bread is slashed.

I love shiney crusts you crack off and nibble on with thick white fluffy centers that melt in your mouth. Those bread machines I found never deliver that.

Some of the latest breadmachines have much more sophisticated software and do proving and kneading more than once.

Making bread properly—by hand—is rather time consuming.

If you want to do, buy The River Cottage BREAD HANDBOOK from Fishbowl or The Book Depository.

It can be quite therapeutic though, especially the punch down Wink

Aga, in my opinion, for purists. I've always wanted, and been hunting for an old school wood range. The ones I've found have been less than useful, so Aga is the closest I've come. Also I have a gas cook top and a convotherm oven, at home and in my café. As cooking is my vocation and career, these work for me very well.

I dont think anyone on  here should have a gas oven to be honest we have more than  our share of fruitloops...

not including the cwa girls of course...but one or two on here are quite irrational.and keep asking the same questions over and over...

now that is a worry
