John Howard is broken
Oct 6th, 2015 at 4:41pm

Quote:
Mr Howard introduced the ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, a move which has been repeatedly praised by US president Barack Obama.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-06/rapid-fire-shotgun-heading-to-australia-af...

Along with immigration policy, the gun laws were the biggest issue in Australia that Howard introduced that divided society.

Forget the Iraq war or anything similar, that was a global effort.

Domestically, this was the big one. It still carries on today.

Now he is going on about the current US president, nearly 20 years after the laws were changed, praising the laws.

John Howard is an idiot. Obama is a Democrat. Democrats traditionally have a policy of tighter gun restrictions. It is their history.

Obama is not praising Australia's gun laws. He is trying to surround his policy plan with positive reinforcement.

John Howard should go die in a ditch somewhere.

New Zealand has had no mass shooting since 1996, they allow recreational hunters to have semi autos with silencers.

Mass shootings in Australia after 1996, Monash University, Hectorville shooting,Lockhart shooting.

New Zealand has better gun laws compared to Australia.

Monash University - 2 killed.
Hectorville shooting - 3 killed.
Lockhart shooting - murder suicide, not really a "mass shooting" (family of 5)

NZ:
Raurimu massacre (1997) - 6 killed.
RSA Panmure (2001) - 3 killed.
WINZ Ashburton (2014) - 2 killed.

New Zealand's gun homicide rate (per capita) is over double Australia's.\

I'm not going to claim it's due to the gun laws, though.

A lot of this debate on this thread is silly. You cannot eliminate gun violence. You can only greatly reduce it which is what Australia and NZ have done. John Howard is generally praised for the gun laws from both sides of politics. Only the idiot shooters disagree... but they would, wouldn't they?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramoana_massacre

"The Aramoana massacre was a spree shooting that occurred on 13 November 1990 in the small seaside township of Aramoana, to the northeast of Dunedin, New Zealand.  Resident David Gray, after a verbal dispute with his next-door neighbour, killed 13 people, including local police Sergeant Stewart Guthrie, one of the first responders to the reports of a shooting. After a careful house-by-house search the next day, police officers led by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (now known as the Special Tactics Group) located Gray and shot him dead as he came out of a house firing from the hip. It is the deadliest criminal shooting in New Zealand history."

My daughter worked on the film in 2006....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_the_Blue_%282006_film%29

Not saying this means I support Wee Johnnie's Little Man With Short Penis Problem and his gun laws - I oppose those laws on the grounds that they created a new breed of outlaw/criminal out of countless innocent  gun owners and men, and nowhere more than when allied with the implementation by Commissar Carr of 'domestic violence laws' here - which permit the police to confiscate legally owned and fully licenced firearms by regulation, when the very issue of gun control by savage limitation and control was defeated at the election just prior.

Wee Johnnie's laws have created a massive underground market in firearms to the detriment of the general community, which has no control over those arms in any way, and has seen countless thousands of such firearms fall into criminal hands because reasonable and legitimate owners cannot own them.

The Little Wimp was more concerned that the people of Oz would fire on him and his cohorts when they stuffed up the country - as has been happening here since Keating and even before.

Never trust ANY politician with what sounds like a good idea, and politicians past should be put out to pasture on half pay and told to STSU for life.

I guess you would know, being part of Obama's inner circle and privy to his thoughts on this issue. Did his gun laws force you to give up your pea shooter? Maybe you should go die in a ditch somewhere?

Howard copied labor's gun laws from 1988, the AIC have a document which is dated 1988 it covers just about everything Howard claimed except it allows semi auto rifles for farmers.

Looking at ABS data from 1991-2001 it appears the semi autos that Howard banned were the least common type of gun used for murder-suicides, single digit figures for every year except Pt Arthur.

The worst mass killings on the east coast of Australia were done with fire, the Childers backpacker and Quakers hill fires.
