The new electorate of Whitlam

http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/3427288/throsby-renamed-whitlam-in-boun...

Quote:
Throsby will be renamed Whitlam, a report into the proposed redistribution of federal electorates in NSW has revealed.

The Redistribution Committee for NSW published details of its proposed boundary changes on Friday.

The committee has suggested Throsby be renamed Whitlam in honour of the former Prime Minister, Edward Gough Whitlam.

Boundary shifts have been mooted for all Illawarra seats. The changes are varied, but relatively minor.

A shift in Whitlam’s boundaries would see it gain 209 people from around Unanderra (formerly Cunningham), 2981 from the area around Bundanoon, Penrose and Exeter (Hume), while 16,047 will move from the Gilmore electorate.

The entire Shellharbour Local Government Area would sit within the proposed Whitlam seat.

Under the proposal, Gilmore would extend as far south as Tuross Heads and gain almost 22,000 voters around from its southern neighbour, Eden-Monaro (Liberal).

Elsewhere, Cunningham gains 8275 voters around Port Kembla and Warrawong from Throsby. In order to keep Cunningham out of metropolitan Sydney, its northern edge shifts south to the Wollongong LGA boundary.

The committee says moving the Illawarra out of the Greater Sydney region contributes to a “cumulative shortfall of electors” in the region, the reason for all coastal seats moving south.

The redistribution has been prompted by a decrease in NSW representation in the House of Representatives, from 48 to 47 seats.

I suppose it's  fitting for such a bastion of 'True-Believerness'.... Undecided

It is normal for deceased PMs to be honoured with an electorate named after them in their home state. They are also proposing to rename the Division of Fraser in the ACT so the name can become available for a Victorian electorate at Victoria's next redistribution.

There will eventually also be electorates named after Hawke, Keating, Howard, Rudd, Gillard, Abbott and Turnbull. Even Prime Ministers who only served as caretakers for less than a month are honoured in this way. This is why we have Divisions of McEwen, Page and Forde.

It also looks like the ACT seat of Fraser is to be renamed at some stage to allow the future use of the name for a renamed Victorian seat in honour of Malcolm Fraser

There is a positive side to that happening.

IMO it would be worse to live in Howard, Abbott had some redeeming aspects.

They'd need to find a massive idiot , fitting of Abbott, to be the MP of that electorate. Grin

Anyone who can't read or write should apply.

Its a name of an electorate, does it really matter?

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

No, it doesn't matter that much.
