Maybe. Men bowed to women and called them mam or miss. It goes back a long way. Most aussie men in the 1940's for instance would never swear in front of a women. It still isn't common. I'm not saying things didn't happen behind closed doors. The bad things were kept quiet and hidden in the past. I don't think hitting women is common in Australia now but it happens. I'm not sure about some ethnic communities though. The muslim community would be interesting to look into.

You led a sheltered life, it's always been a big part of Aussie family life.......right through from the good old convict days up until this very day.
It's not really a cultural thing, that was tongue-in-cheek, it's just a fact of life.

even using bad language in front of them was never on in Aussie culture.

See what I mean, these sorts of 'rules' change over time.

You obviously haven't been near any Australia Day celebrations lately.
So you have inside knowledge of incidents of domestic violence in every Australian family from convict times to now. I'm impressed.

So rowdy Aussies swearing in public reads as:

domestic violence in every family.

OMA!!!!!....did you even pass Kindergarten?

I was referring to bad language, if you care to read it once then once again so that you fully comprehend.

Bad language is the norm so don't try to make out that we have some kind of sophisticated polite culture.

You were referring to both domestic violence and swearing. Domestic violence has never been a big part of Australian life. Wake up to yourself or write clearer posts.

"May 28, 2015 - Australian police deal with an estimated 657 domestic violence matters on average every day of the year".

That's an amazing 231,000 per year. Not all men hitting women of course, but DV is alive and well in Australia.

They have redefined domestic violence to include harsh words without any violent acts, perhaps that is why numbers have increased.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. You'll find that most wife bashers are multiple offenders. I still don't think it's common. I've never known  a family member, friend or associate convicted of domestic violence.

That's incorrect.  There was a very recent schmedia article which noted the recidivist rate at 25%. (Something like that.) That means 75% are one off.  I'll go find the link if you doubt it.

Multiple-Perpetrator Domestic Violence

2014 | Research papers

Author(s)

Michael Salter

A significant proportion of reports of domestic violence against women involve multiple perpetrators. Although the number of perpetrators has been consistently identified as a measure of abuse severity, only a minority of studies of domestic violence examine the role of multiple offenders. Data on multi-perpetrator domestic violence (MDV) is frequently removed from analysis in domestic violence studies, or multi-perpetrator incidents are treated as single-perpetrator incidents. However, the available research links MDV to negative mental and physical health outcomes, intimate partner homicide, homelessness among women, and severe mental illness and suicidality. This article reviews the available prevalence data on MDV and draws together research on the contexts in which MDV takes place. It highlights two groups that are particularly vulnerable to MDV: (1) girls and women partnered to members of gangs and organized crime groups and (2) girls and women in some ethnic minority communities. While discussions of honor in relation to domestic violence are often racialized in Western media, this article highlights the crosscultural role of masculine honor in collective violence against women in the working class and impoverished communities of majority cultures as well as in migrant and ethnic minority communities. It is clear that such complex forms of violence present a range of challenges for intervention and treatment and the article emphasizes the need for specialized and coordinated modes of investigation, support, and care
