Senator Bill Heffernan uses parliamentary privilege to accuse former PM of being alleged paedophile

Liberal senator Bill Heffernan has used parliamentary privilege to accuse an unnamed former prime minister of being an alleged paedophile, while also pointing the finger at the judiciary.

Senator Heffernan has been campaigning for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to expand its investigation to include the court system.

He told Senate estimates today that he had given the commission "very disturbing" police documents that named at least 28 alleged paedophiles, some of whom are prominent Australians.

But he said the commission had told him it could not investigate the cases because they were outside its terms of reference.

"We have in Australia, sadly, a compromise at the highest of levels. There is a former prime minister on this list and it is a police document, " he told senators.

"It's not so much the secret that's the problem, it's when a group of people, such as the 28 people on this page, keep each other's secrets that the institution is compromised."

Senator Heffernan did not expand on the allegations or provide any further details, instead focusing on what he believed were the failings of the "the institution of the law".

"The treatment in the federal jurisdiction of children by some people in the Family Law Court is disgusting and a disgrace," he said.

Attorney-General George Brandis suggested the royal commission could look into the "grave matters" raised by the senator but said it was ultimately up to the commissioner to decide.

"The royal commission has a process for dealing with complaints and other information brought to its attention and placed into its hands by citizens," he said.

"It is for the royal commission to judge whether, by reference to its terms of reference, that information is something that it should or indeed is capable of inquiring further into."

Liberal Bill Heffernan says he has a police list which names a former prime minister in a group of prominent alleged paedophiles.

Liberal senator Bill Heffernan claims he has a police list which names 28 prominent people, including a former prime minister, as suspected pedophiles.

Senator Heffernan didn't name any names but called on Attorney-General George Brandis to expand the child abuse royal commission so that it includes the legal fraternity.

He told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Tuesday he had provided the commission with documents, one naming the alleged pedophiles including "a whole lot of prominent people."

Senator Heffernan is a vociferous campaigner against paedophiles, but his information hasn't always been right.

In 2002 he used parliamentary privilege to falsely accuse a judge of using commonwealth cars to procure young men for sex.

He said there was sadly a compromise at the highest levels.

"There is a former prime minister on this list and it is a police document," he said.

Senator Heffernan said the documents, delivered to him by a police agency some time ago, were very disturbing.

"No one seems to want to deal with them," he said.

"It's not so much the secrets that's the problem. It's when a group such as the 28 people on this page keep each other's secrets."

Senator Heffernan said the Wood royal commission in the 1990s indicated it was going to explore which members of the Sydney legal fraternity used to attend Costellos, the boy brothel club in Kings Cross. The commission, however, did not look into Costellos.

"A lot of them are still practising," he said.

Attorney-General George Brandis said just because someone's name appeared on a list didn't make them guilty.

He advised Senator Heffernan to go to the current child abuse royal commission, which would decide if the information was something it could inquire into.

"We should respect any decision of the royal commission about the ambit and scope of its terms of reference," he said.

it sicken me to see the usual sickos on here turning another serious thread into a get even asap.. stupid childish and gutter stuff go away.. you people do it to any thread I am over it..

he is talking about paedophilia something you guys seem to think is FINE...makes me wonder it really does...

i do hope greg you dont have children and or ever likely to have...

the same for you light why put up a thread like this.. then throw anyone and everyone to the wolves...

how do we know you guys are not covering up something more than sinister in your own lifestyles.. Angry

some on here really make me sick...if Heffernan has a list 28 names of high up Australians... just like they have in England.. we have a right to see them exposed in the right fashion..

via an investigation by the Police...who have a huge dept that alone deals with paedophiles..
