'Deeply Sick' Charles Becoming Head Of State
Oct 21st, 2015 at 10:01am

Paul Keating urges Malcolm Turnbull to save Australia from Prince Charles becoming head of state

Former prime minister Paul Keating has urged Malcolm Turnbull to save Australia from Prince Charles becoming head of state, calling the prospect "deeply sick".

In a conversation with ABC journalist Kerry O'Brien at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night, Mr Keating reiterated his call for Australia to become a republic.

"No great country has a monarch ... of another country as their head of state," he said.

"And no great country has a flag of another country in the corner of their flag."

The former Labor prime minister said he expected Mr Turnbull to win the next election and said the issue should be addressed in his government's next term.

"It requires a prime minister to take it on," he said.

"You can have all the republican movements you like, but if a prime minister doesn't want to take this on, it won't happen."

He said the idea of ending up with Prince Charles as Australia's head of state after the reign of Queen Elizabeth II ended was "deeply sick".

"What are we going to end up with?" he asked.

"Charles and Camilla, for God's sake."

He said Mr Turnbull faced other problems within his party after wrestling the leadership from Tony Abbott.

"The real question is, can he take the now very right-wing Liberal Party anywhere back near the centre?" he asked.

"That'll be the real test ... or whether he's stuck with the Loony Tunes show on the right."

I couldn't stand Keating, but he is dead right on this one. Having someone as despicable as Charles as Head of State would be a travesty. It is a shame he has to ruin the point though by disrespecting righties for being righties.

I see nothing wrong in Australia maintaining a symbolic link with its British heritage.
And that's all it is - symbolic. Our GG is the de facto and de jure head of state.

I found it more offensive to have that Qld woman as effective head of state than it would be to have any of the royal family visit from time to time.

Keating, for all his other qualities, has imbibed too much of the poisonous hate from Jack Lang and has never been able to get it out of his system.

And that was why the people 'loved' him so much they voted him out with the second biggest majority ever.  He had his chance when he had the big chair and didn't even try.

The facts are that the Royals have no effective sway over Australia and so who is King/QUeen etc is interesting but irrelevant.

I agree. But if we end up staying a monarchy, I'd hope Charles declines the throne when his mother either passes or steps down and William takes over as monarch. At least then the Royal family would have someone respectable as its head.

Exactly, and the head of state role is purely symbolic in our system of government anyway.

Nothing more powerful than a symbol. Having a head of state on the other side of the world is a sick joke. Having that bloody union jack on OUR flag is an insult!

Thank heavens the grown-ups are back in charge.

The symbolic ones, anyway.

Doesn't matter - he won't have the final say. It'll have to go to a vote of the Australian people, not the parliament.
