Specialist teams and trained counsellors will identify students at risk of radicalisation and help to counter violent extremism in schools as part of a $47 million package developed by the Baird government.

Five expert teams will be deployed across NSW schools to respond to incidents of violent extremism and help schools that have been "identified" as being at risk.

The teams, which will cost about $15 million, include former principals, psychologists and student support workers and will help schools to develop strategies.

Counsellors and teaching staff will have access to extra support and training from the start of the 2016 school year, to give them skills to identify students at risk.

As part of the measures, 200 extra counsellors will be recruited and trained so that they can identify vulnerable students and refer them to support programs.

A hotline will also be set up for people needing advice on how to help young people who may be exposed to violent extremist influences.
