That sounds like a reasonable excuse for big mining not to pay its fair share of tax Cods  Roll Eyes

Defending the indefensible. Typical Tory.

They are probably seeking to give Chevron a billion dollar refund for next tax return.

There's theory and then there's talk.  Takes a while to set up the dogs to track things down - though with virtually everything online now with the ATO I simply can't see why.

I suspect we are being kept in the dark.

the article below was good and shines the spotlight on where vast amounts are hidden.

I still say we need an 'entry tax' - you want to trade here, you pay a specified amount of tax on your gross earnings.  Your issues with offshore tax haven governments and home company are your own concern.

"The ATO said Chevron used a series of loans and related-party payments worth billions of dollars to slash its tax bill by up to $258 million."

That's the game - and Joe Hockey said he would be working on sorting that kind of thing out.

It's like saying you shouldn't pay part of your income tax because some of the money used to set up your home was borrowed from your missus or your uncle or your father or you cousin twice removed who is also your wife...........

Their record of success hasn't been real good with going after the filthy rich

If I recall they went after Kerry Packer and he won.

Paper trail too complex.  Things have improved a little since then and connections between companies in a group are more closely monitored.  I think Bondie had a lot to do with that.

Next time you fill out your tax return, you don't even have to have anything in front of you - the ATO computers will just fill it all in for you.  I do it every year since I have only a limited taxable income.  The joys of Big Brother.  they've got it for the tiddlers like us, but not for the big fish it seems.
