Muslim Woman Mutilates Daughters

Sydney mother guilty of mutilating daughters' genitals

A Sydney mother has been found guilty of mutilating the genitals of her two young daughters, in the first case of female circumcision heard in an Australian court.

The mother of the two girls and a former midwife, neither of whom can be named, cut the two sisters' clitorises in separate incidents in 2009 and 2012.

When one of the girls, who is aged nine, appeared in the courtroom via video link Justice Peter Johnson removed his wig, to try and make the girl feel more at ease, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"I don't think it will have a magical effect, but I hope it will make us look a little more human," Justice Johnson said.

A high-ranking member of the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community, Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri, was also found guilty on a charge of accessory after the fact.

The trio made no reaction as the verdicts were read out in the NSW Supreme Court on Thursday.

The defence had argued the cutting, known as "khatna", was "secret women's business" and had not injured the girls.

The three defendants will remain on bail until sentencing in February and have been forced to surrender their passports.

They will face a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment on each count.

Vaziri had reportedly attempted to flee to India the day he was arrested.

incident. My mother took me to the house of a woman in our Bohra mohalla. Except for the lady, no one was at home. I was told to lie down on my back on the floor and spread my legs. It hurt me bad and brought tears to my eyes. The whole thing was over in a matter of minutes. As I grew up and became aware of my sexuality I realized the purpose of
circumcision is to discourage masturbation. It limits the possibility of sexual pleasure from the stimulation of the clitoris. The circumcision exposes the nerve endings and direct contact makes the area hypersensitive and painful to
prolonged touch.

The main reasons for doing circumcision respondents gave include:
a) it is obligatory on the parents to do it as it is mentioned in the shariat;
b) it is a tradition/custom in the community; and
c) to curb the girl’s sexuality.

It leaves me and others compelled to point out, yet again, that not all Muslims behave like this.

Agreed. We need such practises exposed and heavily punished and we need to get to people before they do anything like this.

Agreed. We need such practises exposed and heavily punished and we need to get to people before they do anything like this.

A big issue a have with Islam is that it's widely preached in the Mosques that Islam is the law and no other rules apply. The varies from congregation to congregation. Some have no respect for our laws to abiding by them. It is a big issue. There needs to be a big overhaul and investigation into what's being preached for our unity and safety.
