Opposition Leader Bill Shorten crashes into parked cars in north Melbourne

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten crashed into a number of parked cars while driving in Melbourne on Sunday morning, his office has confirmed.

Mr Shorten's office said the Labor leader was driving in the suburb of Carlton when he sideswiped two vehicles.

He was driving his late mother's car at the time.

Mr Shorten is now dealing with insurance claims in relation to the damage.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said there was no official report of an incident matching that description.

He said under Victorian law if no-one was injured, people could exchange details without making a police report.

The crash was first raised publicly by an anonymous caller to Melbourne commercial radio station 3AW who said they came across a "quite a prominent Opposition politician" in the aftermath of an accident.

"On Sunday morning I was doing some gardening, heard a loud bang," the caller said.

"Went around the corner, noticed a car wedged between the median strip and the parked cars between Rathdowne Street and Drummond Street."

"[I] noticed the gentlemen who got out of his car quite shaken.

"I asked him what happened? He spilt a short black on his lap and wrote off his car."

Who cares?

A MINOR bingle which could happen to anyone, at any time.

Only rightards would try to make political capital out of what is, by any measure, a non-event.

SO in other words making honest mistakes, but taking quick immediate steps to fix those mistakes rather than covering them up. Thats an excellent way to govern.

Minor? He damaged THREE cars, writing off his late mothers car! It's not a "minor" accident when you write off a car.

Lets hope he was taken to hospital and tested. It would've been mandatory to provide blood and urine samples to Police given the amount of damage he caused.
