Foreigners should not be permitted to own Australian land.

Lease, yes.

Own, no.

It's not like they can pack it up and take it home with them.

No - but the profits and taxes vanish offshore......

Had a bizarre situation arise in my town a couple of years ago my local council sold a park to a chinese investment company Everich International on that land there now is a Woolworths and a Dan Murphys.

That is just tokenism that hides the truth. The Liberals have been responsible for putting more Australian assets into foreign hands than any other political party. It's why the government of Singapore now owns more Australian energy and telecommunications infrastructure than the Government of Australia. Blocking a sale here and there doesn't atone for past sins.

dont panic dear.. it [assets]never leave the country.....

its just money changing hands.....

I have yet to hear of any aussie knocking back an offer from an overseas investor....sorry but when I sold my house I did not occur to me to ask if they were Australians buying it..... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes..

would I have knocked them back had they said NO..

well to be honest I doubt it... but who knows..

Cods, from what I heard the sale was blocked on national security grounds because part of the land is adjacent to the Woomera Protected Area. Morrison had no real choice but to block the sale.

Same as if it were leased.

BTW, the taxes are payable here. There's nothing magic about ownership of the land. The profits are distributed to the shareholders or become retained earnings for future capitalisation. Same as any other organisation.

Only after the back-to-momma loans and costs to 'consulting firms' etc, etc, etc on paper are paid off - and these shareholders are where (ta-boom-tish) - Not In Australia?  Wanna bet the lot is distributed to 'shareholders' offshore and future re-capitalisation is via back-to-momma loans that will incur tax deduction again.

You are but one step away there, Croc, but your work is good.  Read up on Alan Bond's companies structure for a good lesson.

That's not the point Grapples. The deed holder of the land has no effect on the above. It is true whether the premises and land are owned, rented, leased or squatted.

Well done Morrison, even though the reason to block it a bit of BS.

The main reason it was blocked was the public are very anti the sale, after all we are talking about about 1% of the total land mass of Australia.

He has left the door open for them to come back with alternate proposals so a joint venture 50/50 with Australian interests might be acceptable

Just curious - is there any such thing as a quarter glass full type of person or is there a point where we all turn into realists ?

I am currently looking at a cup about 8% full but can not help but to see it as almost empty, disappointing really, I don't know where it all went.

Lucky I know where it comes from.

It is now 0.2% full but the rest won't come out - I'm declaring it empty or zero per cent full.
