If they got within 100 metres of Christmas Island, they were in Australian territory and able to claim asylum.  They cannot lawfully be towed back out.

Perhaps they were just going fishing?  Cheesy

A "small wooden boat carrying 12 people".

Where does it say they got 100 metres from Christmas Island?

Link please!

OP says 200 metres.  Shoot me.

Nope.  You'll keep.  Wink

Christmas Island shire president Gordon Thomson said locals spotted the fishing boat early on Friday morning about 100 to 200 metres from Smith Point, the entry to the island's harbour.

Not a credible source not covered anywhere else.

12 people, normally they pack them in like sardines in a tin so this sounds like some fishermen who got lost or broke down , who were then rescued by our Navy and taken home.

Why, in that case, would they not land Christmas Island, get fresh supplies and any repairs (they pay for them) and off they go....or is our Navy running a lost fisherman taxi service (free) these days?

Mmmm Is there a "marker" out there that says "Australian Territory"? I doubt it.

How FAR is 100 yards, errr metres? How long does it take you to walk 100 metres?  Can you see your car, say, a 100 metres away in a parking lot?

I'd say very dodgey information from people with memory (or vision) problems.  Grin

Never did.

Locals on the island
told SBS WA Correspondent Ryan Emery, who is on Christmas Island, that it was the
first time
such a boat had made it that close
since 2013
.

No wonder you are the target of most of the contemptuous ridicule on these boards.

Pecca is quite the whiny little child. CI is a REALLY long way from Australia and not far at all from Indonesia.

I'll assume you are serious.  Yeas, unless you are blind, you can easily see 100 and 200 metres.   Some very fast sprinters can run 100 metres in about ten seconds, and 200 in about 21 seconds.

Happily that problem was sorted when the Libs excised Christmas Island, to go one better Rudd excised the entire mainland.

So the issue with you is the distance from shore the refugees were ... and not weak border protection from the turnbull mob ?

Leaky boats are NOT male sprinters. Have you any clue what type of "boat" these people are paying $5-10,000 to board?

I thought you were a Leftie. Kind, considerate and want to help people.  I am a Rightie and I want to do exactly the same.

The problem is HOW the Government does it.

For example. Are YOU prepared to give away some (or all) of the money you have accumulated?

I am NOT.  I worked hard for what I have and I did start with NOTHING in December 1980 when I left my husband.  Who was abusive.

This could be true, we will find out for sure one day.

We only know about this one because it got so close to land and was spotted by people on the island.

Where is it now?

We want to know Mr Dutton.

Are the asylum seekers being cared for?

Are there children on board?

Is anyone sick on board?

Surely Mr Turnbull can't expect the good people of Australia to vote for him when he keeps this sort of information under wraps.

We want a transparent government, transparent in every way.

We won’t be told a damn thing.

Can turnbacks still happen or has Turncoat mended relations with Indo and agreed no turnbacks?

If that is the case there will be a flood of boats.
