Hot weather: Canberra breaks record for longest run of 30 degree-plus March days
Posted Thu at 1:31pm

Canberra has sweated through the longest stretch of 30 degree-plus March days since 1983, and the late heatwave is expected to continue.

Thursday was the 10th day in a row to see the temperature break into the 30s, and Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist Agata Imielska said stable, dry conditions were to blame.

"[We are] also still in El Nino, which generally results in warmer daytime temperatures and increased numbers of heatwaves," she said.

"Another thing that's been unusual is the lack of cool outbreaks; it's been persistent but also quite unusual that we haven't seen any cool weather coming through.

"Climate change also plays a factor here ... again, more likely to see warmer days, less likely to see those cool outbreaks."

Ms Imielska said the run of hot days had been felt across much of the country.

"This has been quite unusual in terms of the persistence of the heat conditions that we've experienced, and it's not just Canberra," she said.

"These conditions have been broadly experienced across south-east Australia.

"Australia-wide we have set a record for the warmest March day, which was March 2."

Despite the heat stretching into the start of Autumn, acting head of the Rural Fire Service Joe Murphy said fire dangers were not particularly affected.

"This is business-as-usual activity for us — the fire danger ratings aren't particularly high right now," he said.

"We're expecting maybe a bit of rain over the weekend, we'd really like some rain ... but we're not seeing any elevated fire danger.

"We'd really like people to stay vigilant, but don't overreact."

Ms Imielska said a predicted wet April meant relief was on the way.

"We are expecting wetter conditions coming through in April, and this is something that we've seen previously with the breakdown of El Nino events."

However, in the immediate future, the stretch of warm weather is set to continue with the bureau forecasting a maximum of 32 degrees for both Friday and Saturday, and 30 degrees on Sunday.

The temperature's rising and its not a coincidence.

Quote:
Record-breaking temperatures due to heatwave in Australia BY AFP - 15 MARCH 2016 @ 4:27 PM SYDNEY:

A heatwave has Australia gripped in a seemingly endless summer, with a run of record-breaking temperatures even as autumn officially begins. The Bureau of Meteorology has said the abnormal conditions were affecting almost the entire country in early March, the month which marks the start of autumn. A lack of rain and cooler winds left the east coast suffering a prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather, it said in a special climate statement released on Friday.

Bureau climatologist Blair Trewin said Tuesday the heat was consistent with the “well-established warming trend in long-term average temperatures” in Australia and globally. “With overall warming average temperatures you would expect to see more warm extremes and fewer cold extremes – and that’s exactly what we are seeing,” Trewin told AFP. The bureau said the extreme phase of the national heatwave ended around March 9-10, but temperatures remained generally above average.

On the east coast, Sydney continued to sweat with its Observatory Hill post notching up a record
39 consecutive days
of the temperature reaching 26 degrees Celsius (79F) or above. The previous record was 19 days
set in March 2014. “Sydney also had a record run of nights above 20 (Celsius),” said Trewin. “They had a run of 25 nights in a row above 20 which was terminated this morning by the narrowest possible margin – it was 19.9.” Trewin said it was too early to say whether this would be the nation’s hottest March, but a number of records had already been smashed with temperatures running 10 degrees above average in some areas.

The report said that over hottest part of the heatwave, maximum temperatures were 4 degrees Celsius or more above average over most of the continent but 8-12 degrees Celsius above average in much of the southeast. The report said rainfall was significantly below normal in the country’s tropical north, with the northern city of Darwin experiencing its driest January-February since 1965.--AFP

The heat has got to GordyL who reacts badly, then blathers incessantly. GordyL, darling, lift your kilt, relieve your plight and let the hot air dissipate and relieve your stress.

Stand back and avert your eyes ladies and gentlemen.

It is indeed very scary. 2015 was hot and 2016 looks like it is going to be very much hotter.

Recent March heatwaves in Australia have wakened those who were skeptical based on Australian recent experience.

AGW is happening and it appears to be unstoppable because it is in a positive feedback phase.

This recent March? The one that is only half over? You are determining a trend on half a month? Truly delusional.  Grin Grin Grin

I remember your February post - hottest ever

...

'Ninth-warmest February on record for Australia '

Regional warming is now AGW? Congratulations on the leap of faith.

You can't ignore record breaking periods of temperature above average. Overall Australia doesn't have a dominant effect on world average temperature because most of the world above-sea land mass is in the Northern Hemisphere.
