It probably depends on what is meant by independent thought. I interpret it as: the ability to comprehend and know logical fallacies; the ability to know one's own biases and interests; the ability to construct arguments; the honesty to follow an evidence trail; being cognizant of the difference between description and judgment.

I believe this can be taught, but only to the select few. But, perhaps you are right, in that the ability to learn all this relies on a certain personality type.

Some of those can be taught, but I think the biggie that can't is the ability to know ones biases and interests.

If you're not an introverted personality type, I'm not sure you can ever really have the capacity for introspection and mindfulness that it requires.

Knowing the difference being judgement and description is another. It could perhaps be trained rather than learnt, but it requires a level of control of emotion that not everyone possesses.

The first task of teachers of independent thought is to point out all the lay-lines and song-lines of dependent thought.

For once I agree with you entirely. The leftards are too afraid of being proven wrong and thus being shown up as the hysterical m.o.r.o.n.s everyone knows they are to listen to critical evidence regardless of how compelling. Who would've thought we would agree on something such as 'climate change'? Wonders never cease!
