I call BS on this subject. Clearly the choice is $ 1 postage or no mail delivery because it is not profitable.

Australia Post does not owe an obligation to anybody in regard to mail service prices. Australia Post is not a welfare provider.

Historically......it does and it is.  Anyone remember the PMG?

Worked for the

The elderly are about the only people still writing letters. But even they can (and do) organise automatic bill payment so that limits it even more. But you can't ask AP to run at a significant loss.

Most elderly I know have a computer and have done for years and are not afraid of using the Net to buy stuff online or do their banking that way.  I get all sorts of "rude" jokes from elderly rellies.  Grin

In the 1990s elderly people still used paper and pen but not these days. Most of them have a "smart phone" as well.

Maybe we need to define 'elderly. To my mind, that means 75+.  Although, according to a victorian report on 'elderly drivers' they defined it as anyone 49yo and up.
