Yay!!! for Sarah Hanson-Young. Sometimes it seems like she's the only one that cares about the plight of the child detainees. ..................................................................
When you're doing your Christmas shopping this year, please spare a thought for the children who won't be celebrating because they're locked in immigration detention.
This year we're asking you to, once again, buy an extra toy for one of these children who need your help. Right now there are 4500 children who are either locked in detention centres in Australia, languishing on Nauru or living in limbo in the community.
Will you donate a gift for a child in detention? Let’s show them that they have not been forgotten this Christmas. Click here for a list of the most requested toys and goods.
Despite the Senate recently passing Greens amendments to a government bill that would see children and their families released from detention centres in Australia by Christmas, Malcolm Turnbull failed to follow through and put the bill into law, so the majority will still be detained in centres across Australia.
Will you help to put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas and donate a toy?
Suggestions for suitable gifts include:
Games – UNO, cards, chess sets, backgammon, checkers, quoits, snakes & ladders, ludo, board games
Sporting goods - rubber balls, tennis balls, soccer balls, yoyos (no skipping ropes)
Reading material – books, magazines, puzzles, dictionaries, English grammar books
Please note that in order for gifts to be accepted by detention centres they must be in brand new condition. Click here for a full list of acceptable gifts for children living in detention and in the community.
Please send the toys, unwrapped, to my electorate office at Level 7 147 Pirie Street, Adelaide, SA, 5000.
Please keep in mind that toys will only be accepted until Friday the 18th of December.
This is the third consecutive year that we've run this toy drive and every time it brings joy to thousands of children who otherwise would have gone without. We will keep fighting to have all children released from immigration detention so that hopefully, next year, they can have the greatest gift of all; freedom.
Yours in hope,
Sarah Hanson-Young
P.S. We know that detention is no place for children
