And also, how are small businesses operating without fibre?  And yet, amazingly they manage to do this very well.

Telehealth is being used now.
PROVE IT
With fibre and hires video it will be even better.

The businesses that use telepresence are the big businesses! But it could be extended to the PS and small business. Imagine the in-home demos or fault finding/fixing that could be done without a technician ever leaving the business.
Yep... come and fix my fridge via webcam.  They could do that now except no one does.

When they ran out the electrical network it was just to light homes. But once electricity was there electric vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, radios and other entertainment and labor saving devices soon appeared and their number now is huge. TVs appeared then PCs.

When the copper CAN was rolled out in the 50s it was just for voice. Fax then the internet started to use the CAN and it is now groaning under the strain. Now we have Netflix and other VOD providers daily signing up more customers, all trying to use the rotten, too–thin copper.

Longy, just sit back, think of what you do now and try and imagine doing all this on dial up. With the ever-increasing rollout of FTTH content will be put on websites that we won’t be able to download.

Then comes the next big use of communications—and we will be stuffed because we do not have a national broadband network worthy of the name.

Malcolm’s idiotic CBA is ALREADY outdated with the arrival of Netflix. Then 3D TV and 4 and 8K TV starts being broadcast over our pathetic mishmash of obsolete crap.

It is best to disregard anything Maria says Monk....All she ever provides is her own bias opinion without any independent analysis to back it up....Her opinion is just as valid as anyone else's and just as worthless!!!

Maria is a Luddite who 100 years ago would have been arguing AGAINST the telephone because she couldn't think of dial up or faxes.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

She still has not worked out how to provide a link to support her opinion....It is all about faith you see!!!

ARE THERE ANY FTTN SUBSCRIBERS ANYWHERE IN AUSTRALIA YET?

There are 67 subscribers to FTTN.

In an area where new copper was rolled out after flood. Plenty of spare lines, little noise etc.

On the central coast there are thousands being forced to connect to it, its not optional if you want a phone connection.

What to do you think FTTP was doing? if you didnt accept it you had no fixed phone line.  And FTTN changes nothing for anyone so where is the complaint?  They had a phone line before and that have one after. They had ADSL before and now they have a much faster system. So again... where is the cause for any complaint?

You do know you are referring to a serice that has been in existence for some time pre-NBN and that it is essentially... videconferencing, the thing you claim wont work without FTTH.

Much faster?

Bulldust. FTTN over Telstra copper would be slow even without NBN Co slowing it down artificially!

Some have to pay $5000 and gain nothing, these are small North Coast NSW businesses.

You said it didn’t exist. I didn’t say it was video conferencing, I said hires video conferencing would enhance telehealth.

you're an idiot. It has little to do with webcam. My appliance repair guy charges $100 to come out, he then tells me I need a part and then he charges me another $100 to come back once the part has arrived. $200 before he's even fixed anything. Plus parts and then labor costs to instal the part. And don't tell me to find another one, they all do the same thing.

My TV repairman on the other hand was able to tell me exactly what part I needed when my tv broke down over the telephone, just by getting me to count the number of flashes my LED power indicator did. Of course, that only works with a limited number of the most common faults that they have pre-programmed into the system ..

imagine if they were able to take that further to diagnose every problem on every appliance

My point is that the argument for super-fast broadband is entirely bogus. It refers to technologies we either already do or will never do (Telehealth). It then raves on and on and on about rubbish like home businesses needing to send 10Gb files.

I have often been stuck not being able to send a file when needed.

You really have NFI do you!

Stop talking out of your arse an go back to something you understand.

The amount of FUD you and your ilk spread (that has been shown to be absolute b.s garbage is astounding!

You know nothing about what this country needs.

Do you even understand the differences between the technologies?

I suggest you research and see why FTTH is our only option - if we want to  be productive and competitive internationally.

If you think a skype video call constitutes 'telehealth' then you have really missed the point.

How big?  What stopped it?  Details please since you have some difficulties with the concept of accuracy and truth.

Diagnosing an appliance that way requires the appliance to have that kind of information available within it - which most dont. Plus, it needs to be actually working and most calls are for things that arent. AND if the device has that information available, it doesnt need 100Mbps to transmit the info. It is likely to be a very small data packet that could be sent by dial-up, nevermind ADSL.
