Miners say 'skrew you' to Australia
Dec 18th, 2015 at 9:25am

There is a "50-50 chance" taxpayers could be left to foot a clean-up bill for open cut brown coal mines in Victoria's east, an inquiry has heard.

The issue was raised in evidence to the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry that has been looking into the rehabilitation of the Latrobe Valley's three coal mines: Yallourn, Loy Yang and Hazelwood.

A Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources report stated there was a 50 per cent chance that, "licensees become insolvent, leaving significant costs to be borne by the state in carrying out approved rehabilitation works."

There are times when one just hates being right.

I said this would happen when the mining boom busted, I said it back when there was much hand wringing and angst about taxing miners more...

Now we have this reality to deal with.

Mining clearly has not been all that good for Australia, but the few who gain material wealth clearly had more democratic rights than the rest of us who have to deal with their mess left over.

Now wait for the increased unemployment benefits bill once we start paying all of the now unemployed miners who, like successive Governments put nothing aside to allow for this moment...

Ah - The Latrine Valley on the road to Malbun... had the temerity or utter foolishness to stay there during that fire... I have to wonder what long-term health problems arise from that sulphur-ridden  pollution....

Who's paying for those?  Bet the incidence of 'asthma' and COPD and Emphysema is high in every category... along with heart problems etc....

Both parties have been bought and paid for by Mining.

The Mining industry has been Australia's Shadow Government for decades. Crazy amounts of policy since at least the 1970s has just been handing over more and more power to the Mining industry at the expense of everyone else.

The Northern Intervention against Aboriginals shows how far Mining Companies are willing to go.

Exactly. Farming is subsidised at close to three times the amount that mining is. By the way, anyone notice Jack Sh!t's glaring spelling error? Your parents must be so proud after having sent you to school for those four years before you got kicked out.

Why should the left have to pay for the destruction of the Australian environment?

I always wonder why you right wingers even claim you are Australian when you clearly hate your fellow Australians and want to see them suffer, you clearly hate Australia's environment and want to see it destroyed and you suck the **** of multinational corporations?

Honestly what does being sycophantic to the mining industry do for you? Does Gina come in and crush your pelvis once a week?

Also mining is massively oversubsidised for it's per capita size.

Agriculture and Services dwarf the mining sector.

That brown coal really is filthy stuff - full of impurities, doesn't burn that well, or
very cleanly, and has a fairly low calorific value (meaning it's quite inefficient). It
is not particularly 'old', geologically speaking.

Black coal (anthracite) on the other hand, has few impurities, burns cleanly and well
and has a high calorific value. Anthracite from the Hunter region (Newcastle area) is
well-known for being some of the best steaming-coal in the world. It is generally
formed much earlier geologically, and been formed under much higher pressures.

Why we continue to burn the brown rubbish (often not that far removed from peat)
when we have so much vastly superior black coal, I don't know. It's like having a
choice between kerosene and Premium for your car, and choosing the kerosene.

Oh wait... it's more expensive - so lets flog it off overseas for the benefit of others
(and the profits, of course) while we continue to burn sh1t.

BTW, there are a LOT of wind-turbines around my local region - I don't find them
to be at all offensive or ugly.

7% of the subsidies, 2% of the workforce.
