There are times when one just hates being right.

I said this would happen when the mining boom busted, I said it back when there was much hand wringing and angst about taxing miners more...

Now we have this reality to deal with.

Mining clearly has not been all that good for Australia, but the few who gain material wealth clearly had more democratic rights than the rest of us who have to deal with their mess left over.

Those three nasty brown coal mines were never art of the mining boom genius, they only existed to feed their brown filth into Victoria's power grid, not to export or make money.

In coal mining term they are no better than a eat bog, much like the rest of victoria.

Maybe being totally ignorant works like a charm with your fellow inbred socialist, but in the real world not so much. This country has earned billions out of our mining; we produce 50% of the world steel making coal, try stopping that and see how things turn out, einstein.

Fkkk me you people are beyond stupid.

This country has earned billions out of our mining;

The mostly foreign mining companies have earned billions out of mining ?

The Australian government don't mine anything except for our bank accounts.

Like fortescue metals, BHP, and hancock prosecting and the countless small and medium enterprises all either privately own by Australians or listed on the Australian stock exchange.

Not every mining company is foreign, and the government makes money out of mining without actually being the miner.

So thanks for reinforcing my opinion.

It doesn't take much to climb out of you cesspool of ignorance.

The mining companies profit margins are not in the billions, not by a longs short, god please tell be you know the difference between gross and net profit and how the outgoings of wages, capital expenditure, maintenance all affect those 'billions'.

In one breath we are earning billions and the next its explaining why it was really a loss ? Go figure, then there is the tax concessions.

It makes a mockery of the environmental protections these miners are supposed to abide by....I believe they should have to clean up their mess like any other corporation that agrees to these regulations to be granted a licence....There is no excuse and those making them should pull their heads in!!!

Angry Angry Angry

We shall never understand the natural environment until we see it as a living organism. Land can be healthy or sick, fertile or barren, rich or poor, lovingly nurtured or bled white. Our present attitudes and laws governing the ownership and use of land represent an abuse of the concept of private property.... Today you can murder land for private profit. You can leave the corpse for all to see and nobody calls the cops.

It's not how much the companies make. It's how much Australia gets in export income.

Over the boom they contributed $350B to the country's bottom line.
Most of which Howard and Costello basically blew on wealthfare and unsustainable tax cuts.
Why didn't Labor axe those tax cuts? They had ample opportunity.
You think a little bit of dole money now is asking to much?
Well, you've made it clear enough, and often enough, that for OTHER unemployed people, you believe it IS asking too much. What makes a miner different or more 'deserving' than anyone else who loses their job?
And they will contribute it yet again in the future.
And again, you have indicated on more than one occasion that you believe other unemployed people have been on the dole since they left school and will be on it till they get the pension.

There is a "50-50 chance" taxpayers could be left to foot a clean-up bill for open cut brown coal mines in Victoria's east, an inquiry has heard.

The issue was raised in evidence to the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry that has been looking into the rehabilitation of the Latrobe Valley's three coal mines: Yallourn, Loy Yang and Hazelwood.

A Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources report stated there was a 50 per cent chance that, "licensees become insolvent, leaving significant costs to be borne by the state in carrying out approved rehabilitation works."

You couldnt spell 'screw' correctly?

What is worth noting that all these mines date back many decades well before the current regulations.

Of course I could, but the forums spell checker changed it to 'bugger' on me ... spelling it with a k was the only way it would remain.
